Storm 2 for October Release in UK?    [ 04-08-2009 19:43 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Phone Arena     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

New Blackberry releases tend to generate a bit of excitement and the Storm 2 has certainly caused a stir since a video of it did the rounds on YouTube before being pulled by RIM. Blackberry Zone are reporting that the Storm 2 will see a UK release this October with a U.S. release not far behind in November. The Storm 2 will retain the SurePress screen technology seen in the first Storm, but with improvements. Blackberry OS 5.0 looks likely and Wi-Fi is also expected to feature, a feature high on many Storm owners' wishlists. An October release in the UK would fit in nicely with the buildup to the busy Christmas shopping season and if rumour proves true the launch of the iPhone 3G on T-Mobile UK. Vodafone will almost certainly be looking for a heavy hitter to do some serious business in the midst of so much competition.

T-Mobile UK Offering iPhone 3G to High Spending Customers    [ 04-08-2009 15:14 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: The Register     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It's been revealed that T-Mobile UK are now offering the iPhone 3G to a seelect number of high spending customers who threaten to leave T-Mobile. The news won't come as a big surprise to those who have bene following the iPhone in he UK since T-Mobile has been rumoured to be contemplating such a move for a while now, however, this is the first time that it has actually been confirmed. T-Mobile is buying up unlocked iPhones from a European distributor and then using them as a retention tool. It should be noted that the number of iPhone being used is very small, only 150 a week, with 50 retention staff allowed to use the iPhone deal and each staff member only allowed a maximum of 3 iPhones per week.

It's widely believed that T-Mobile, and possibly Orange, will secure the rights to start selling the iPhone 3G officially in the UK from September so this puts T-Mobile in something of a pickle. Since O2 still has an exclusivity agreement with Apple concenring the iPhone 3G T-Mobile can't be seen to be selling iPhones. Technically they aren't though since they are being offered as an upgrade option to existing customers and without a new SIM card. It's borderline, but T-Mobile must feel confident enough to actually do it without fear of jeapordising future talks with Apple or their German exclusvity deal on the iPhone

Altek T8680 - More 12 MP Goodness (But Only for China!)    [ 04-08-2009 12:04 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It looks like the 12 MP cameraphone scene just got a little more crowded with Altek's T8680. Not that Sony Ericsson or Samsung will be too worried since this beast seems to be confined to China for the moment. Apart from the 12 MP camera the T8680 also sports a 3 inch WQVGA screen, x3 optical zoom, FM radio, xenon flash and tri-band GSM/EDGE. It's probably just as well for the major manufacturers that the T8680 is limited to the Chinese market as its price tag is less than $500, which is pretty good for a 12 MP cameraphone! Sony Ericsson has its own 12 MP behemoth, Satio, coming later this year, and Samsung is rolling with the Pixon 12 MP. Rumour has itt hat Nokia too will jump on the 12 MP bandwagon later this year, but that's more likely to be an announcement than a product launch.

Microsoft Looking to Entice iPhone Develoeprs    [ 04-08-2009 12:00 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With so many different app stores either launched or about to launch the companies behind them are trying to position themselves as best they can to take as much of the pie as possible. To that end Microsoft has released a report entitled 'Porting the Amplitude Application from the iPhone to a Windows Mobile Device'. The aim of the document is quite clear, to attract iPhone develoeprs to the Windows Mobile paltform ahead of the launch of Microsoft Marketplace for Mobile (trying saying that fast!). Apple has by far the most successful app store and even its nearest competitor, Android's Market, is still significantly behind in terms of the sheer volume of apps available. Even though WinMo has been around longer than the iPhone Apple has seen around 1.6 billion app downloads and currently boasts more than 65,000 apps, in other words Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do.

Interestingly enough the document focuses on the iPhone rather than Android, which is backed by Google, one of Microsoft's biggest rivals. Of course Microsoft will no doubt be looking at the success of the Apple App Store and have perhaps decided that its a sweeter target to try and lure develoeprs from. Either way Microsoft's strategy has to pay off, or at least they have to attract some serious dev attention, otherwise their Market may not have much anyone wants to buy ...
