Strong Ericsson Promises Cash for Sony Ericsson    [ 24-04-2009 19:13 ]

No doubt most of you will be aware of recent rumours suggesting that Ericsson was looking to get out of its joint venture with Sony. If a recent statement denying such a split wasn't enough to re-assure you that Ericsson is committed to Sony Ericsson then Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg's announcement that Ericsson are willing to pump funds into Sony Ericsson should they be required will should put your mind at ease. Svanberg commented:

"In the situation they are in today it is a natural measure to take that we plan for this so that we have the readiness if it were necessary."

Ericsson, its CEO said, valued Sony Ericsson because it afforded them a connection with the end-user, which is important in allowing Ericsson to come up with end-to-end solutions. Ericsson itself is in a strong position according to Svanberg, especially with the move towards mobile broadband. Svanberg said:

"We are in the process of building the new IP networks and bringing together today’s fixed and mobile networks. We’re debt-free and by the end of the year we had net cash of SEK 35 billion ($4.2 billion). We have basically no customer financing and extensive cost reduction activities in place. We are market leaders and at the forefront of technological development. The world is experiencing turbulent times, but Ericsson is strong."

With a surging Ericsson at its back Sony Ericsson would look to have some breathing room in a difficult environment. Certainly the prospect of additional funds will be welcome, but so too will the public show of support. It will be interesting to see whether Sony offer that same support in as public a manner.

Nokia 5800 Accounts for 20% of All Touchscreen Handsets Sold in Q1 2009    [ 24-04-2009 18:57 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nokia via Phone Arena     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Nokia 5800 has proven a popular handset with great sales figures, but you may not have realised just how great those figures actually are. Nokia's first touchscreen handset made up around 20% of all touchsv=creen handsets sold in Q1 2009. The figures come from Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo himself, Nokia's CEO.

For their first attempt at a touchscreen smartphone this unbelievably successful by anyone's standards. Early problems with the handset don't appear to have dampened customers' enthusiasm for it and that will have been helped by sensible pricing, which put the 5800 within the reach of many customers especially PAYG customers who may have been looking at more expensive touchscreen handsets like the iPhone or Pixon, but were unable to afford them. With the N97 due to be released within the next few months these figures can only bolster Nokia's confidence that their touchscreen strategy is on a sound footing.
