UK network operator 3 have released images, and technical specifications for their new Skypephone – the S2, and, by the looks of it, it won't be all that much more expensive than the current one. Although, you won't get a choice of colour this time around – only black will be available – initially at least. 3 say it will retail for under £70 on a non-contract (Pay As You Go) – the current Skypephone retails for £49.99, so it's safe to presume the new one will retail for £69.99, or thereabouts. It will be available from August 18th.

The technical specifications are as follows:

• Connectvity: HSDPA
  
• Display: 2.2”, with QVGA resolution
  
• Camera: 3.2 megapixels
  
• Memory: 50MB internal, with MicroSD slot, up to 4GB supported
  
• Extras: Modem drivers built-in, allowing the S2 to be used as dongle on a Windows PC or Apple Mac
  
• Battery: 1150 mAh
  
• Dimensions: 103x45x14 mm

The megapixel battle isn't just heating up in Europe, but Asia too, it would seem. The manufacturer isn't known, but the model number is – X908. Though the phone sports an 8MP sensor, it's possible that the megapixels are interpolated, ala the Xcute DV2, and the iMobile 902. As is mainly the case with these handsets, don't expect to see them readily available in Europe.

The technical specifications are as follows:

• Display: 3” QVGA touchscreen, showing up to 262,144 colours
  
• Camera: Eight megapixels, with 3x optical zoom lens, two megapixel front-facing camera
