Job cuts galore at Sony and Ericsson    [ 16-12-2008 14:30 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

In the current economic climate, companies need to keep costs down to the absolute minimum. Sony, and Ericsson are no exception. Sony Ericsson has fired five hundred people, in the areas of Kista – where the company’s HQ is based, and Lund, in Ericsson’s native Sweden. The company is also keeping costs down in other ways – one being that they recently opened a new facility in India. In the long run, this will cut costs, as employees are paid less, in the Indian base, than if the company were to of set up a new facility in Sweden.

On the Sony side, the company is to axe 16,000 jobs, as demand for their products decline. They look to save around $1.1 billion, per year. 8,000 of those workers will be frequent ones, and around 8,000 temporary and contract staff.

New Palm OS said to be shown off at CES next year    [ 16-12-2008 14:23 ]

Author: Serge Novikov     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It seems Palm are looking to try and reinvent themselves, by showing off a brand new OS at CES, next year. It’s no secret that the company has been in somewhat of a slump recently, it’s smart on their part to try and pull themselves back in the game. The new OS, codenamed Nova looks to be a fresh effort from the company. It’s said to combine the business side of RIM’S Blackberry OS, along with the fun side of Apple’s iPhone OS. The general idea seems to be to appeal to as many consumer needs as possible. You won’t have long to find out what Nova delivers, as CES is to be held during the dates of the 8th and 11th of next month.
