Author: Irina Turina   Source: http://www.ubergizmo.com     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Today, Panasonic announced that they've sold 100 million handsets in Japan, supplying handsets to operators such as NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and, of course, Softbank. Panasonic released their first mobile phone more than twenty years ago, in 1987. By the way, the company's 100 millionth handset sold is the FOMA P905i.

Whilst some other manufacturers have surpassed this number, it's still a noteworthy achievement nonetheless.

Twnety dollar disposable phone is here    [ 11-04-2008 10:52 ]

Author: Irina Turina     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A disposable mobile phone, with no LCD screen, made by Hop-On, has received orders by an unidentified distributor. 10,000 phones have been ordered, on a test basis of sorts. The phone will cost $20/£10/12 Euros. The phone will operate on the 900/1800mhz frequency bands. Of course, with no LCD screen, this phone is aimed at use in emergencies. Besides, for this money you can get a phone much more capable than this, with an LCD screen, but, obviously, it's not disposable.

Peter Michaels, president of Hop-on commented: "Response to our simple, inexpensive, $20 phone was phenomenal. The initial test purchase order with multiple purchase orders behind it is a big step in introducing Hop-on to Europe."

Three million GSM/HSDPA subscribers in the world    [ 11-04-2008 08:18 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: 3G.co.uk     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

3G.co.uk reports that there are over six billion people on the Earth, and three million GSM subscribers.... a scary thought. Of course, quite a lot of people have more than one mobile phone, but still. This was announced by 3G Americas, based upon findings by Informa Telecoms and Media. Of the 3.5 billion mobile subscribers, an overwhelming, but, ultimately, unsurprising 88% of those are subscribed to the GSM family.

GSM technology still outperforms the various forms of communication technologies. To compare, there are 850 million PCs across the world, but, obviously, a PC costs more than your average phone. From March 2007-March 2008, there were over 100 million subscribers in Latim America, and the Caribbean, giving a total of 332 million subscribers in those two regions. And, in the Western Hemisphere, in 2007, there were 110 million subscribers, totalling 420 million.
