Nokia to lay off up to 700 employees [ 16-02-2007 17:21 ]

Handset leader Nokia will lay off up to 700 people globally, mostly in its enterprise business operation, in a move to increase efficiency and improve competitiveness, an Associated Press report said.The Associated Press re port said the layoffs, expected within the next few months, include some 340 workers in Finland. The cuts will affect research and development, related sales and marketing, as well as internal information technology operations.

Nokia said it will try to transfer some of the affected workers to different posts:

"We have a number of positions open in Nokia, and the impacted people are naturally priority candidates for positions that match their competencies," Juha Akras, SVP in the company's human resources department, was quoted by the report as saying. "We have a good track record from previous years of redeploying employees in similar situations."

Neonode Announces the Neonode N2 [ 16-02-2007 17:16 ]

Neonode has announced its own version of "buttonless" touchscreen-based mobile phone. The Neonode N2 replaces the Neonode N1, which was never available to the consumer market in scale, and was based on Microsoft Windows CE.

The company does not disclose on its press information or website if the Neonode N2 is based on Windows CE or some other operating system, but it says the calendar and address book synchronises with ActiveSync which may be the indication it sticks with Microsoft's operating system for embedded devices.

Neonode N2 is a device connecting to the slower GPRS data services, and using GSM Quadband (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz) for voice. Memory can be expanded with the use of a MiniSD card, and it comes with a MP3 Player (MP3, WMA, wav), calendar and address book.

With the expected SMS and MMS capabilities, and support for Bluetooth (Obex, Headset, FTP profiles supported) the device comes with a builtin 2 megapixel digital camera and measure only 47x77x14,7 mm, weighing about 70 grams.

The display is a 2" LCD with 176x220 pixels, and the battery provides up to four hours talk time or 200 hours standby.
