Holux GPSmile 52: a new car navigator    [ 17-10-2006 20:13 ]

Holux has introduced a new car navigator GPSmile 52. This is a compact model with a 3.5” TFT QVGA (240x320 pixels) touchscreen LCD. Like most of the new navigators the GPSmile 52 is based on SiRF Star III chipset.

The navigator is equipped with a Centrality Atlas 200 MHz processor, 64 MB RAM and 32 MB flash ROM, and an SD slot. It is fed by a Li-Pol 2600 mAh battery providing up to 10 hours of work on a single charge.

The GPSmile 52 is powered by Microsoft Windows CE Net 4.2. Measuring 95.5x77x22 mm it weighs 180 g.

In the Internet you can come across the info that LG Electronics is about to announce its smartphone powered by Symbian OS on S60 3rd Edition. Currently neither a press release nor other official info are published, however the company has displayed the smartphone at the current Smartphone Show in London. It is called LG JoY. At All About Symbian you can find a photo from the show (of pretty good quality) and some info about it.

LG JoY is a slider with a 2.4” LCD. The release is expected in 1Q 2007. So, let’s wait for more details.

LG Electronics has also introduced the financial report on 3Q 2006. Sales jumped by 4.5 % to KRW 6.054 trillion (USD 6.34 billion) a quarter earlier and 0.6% from the previous year.

Operating profit recorded KRW 197.2 billion (USD 206.5 million), increased 3.5% quarter on quarter and Mobile Communications and Digital Display Company led net profit to turn-around, booking gains of KRW 22.7 billion (USD 23.7 million) despite an equity method loss from LG.Philips LCD.

From the handsets business only, total shipments were 16.5 million units, an 8% increase from the previous quarter of 15.3 million units and 7% increase year on year. To compare, Sony Ericsson, which has moved LG from the 4th position in the top of mobile phone vendors, sold about 20 million units in 3Q 2006.

PBJ has introduced in Japan its new ultra mobile PC SmartCaddie EX. It works on Celeron M 900 MHz processor, while the previous model SmartCaddie available from April is based on VIA C-7M.

The UMPC is equipped with a 1.3-megapixel camera, 30 GB HDD and 512 MB RAM. Its LCD features a 800x480 pixel resolution. The sales package contains a cradle. The model will be released in December 2006. the recommended price makes up 139800 Yen, i.e. some $1170.

Samsung Electronics has reported 3Q financial results. The company posted net income of 2.19 trillion Won (USD 2.29 billion), a noticeable rise of 16% against 3Q 2005, when net income was 1.88 trillion Won (USD 1.74 billion). The revenue grew 5% from 14.54 to 15.22 trillion Won (USD 15.93 billion).

The company gained such results mainly due to growing sales of mobile phones and the boost in memory chip and LCD business. Mobile phone sales reached a record 30.7 million units.
