ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has approved a top-level domain .tel, says Telnic, the London company, which has the right to register names in this zone.

The .tel zone is supposed to be used as a giant world address book accumulating contact info – phone numbers, addresses and so on. There will be created v-card sites with the contacts of companies and people.

At the moment the company doesn’t make even preliminary registration of names, terms and dates of registration will soon be published at the Telnic site. The domain is expected to be effective in 2007.
