Samsung chooses HF transceiver by Infineon for its EDGE phones    [ 20-04-2006 17:15 ]

Today Infineon Technologies AG announced that Samsung, the third largest mobile phone maker, has chosen a single crystal SMARTi PM CMOS HF transceiver by Infineon for its new EDGE mobile phones, which will come to the market in the second half of 2006. SMARTi PM chip allows decreasing the number of elements by 30% and the HF phone part (including GPRS/EDGE module) by the half compared to the competitors.

SMARTi PM (PMB 6272) represents a quad-band single crystal transceiver made under CMOS technology for GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 voice and high productive applications using data transfer. It measures 5.5x6.5 mm.

The US Federal Communications Commission ((FCC) has approved slim Motorola Q CDMA communicator with the QWERTY-keyboard. The device is meant for mobile networks supporting CDMA standard.

Nokia, Royal Philips Electronics, Vodafone and German regional company Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) have announced the introduction of NFC technology (Near Field Communication) on commercial basis.

The decision followed the successful tests held during 10 months. The tests involved 160 citizens of Hanau near Frankfurt, they used Nokia 3220 phone supporting NFC to pay the fare. 90% of them gave positive comments on the service after the tests were competed.

So Germans with Nokia 3220 will have an opportunity to pay the fare in autobuses and get discounts in local shops. All the citizen of Hanau (95 thousand) can use the service right now. Local shops of Vodafone is about to sell Nokia 3220 with NFC. In the end of the month the users will get bills from the local transport company. According to the company, this is the first commercial NFC service.

O2 operator is about to release soon a limited edition of its Xda Atom Pure – the version of Xda Atom in white shell. It will be released in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Middle and Near East.

The specs of the white version are fully similar to the original model. The communicator is made by the Taiwanese company Quanta Computer, equipped with a 2-megapixel camera, FM-tuner and touchscreen LCD. The device is powered by Windows Mobile .0 for Pocket PC.
