iOS 6 Coming On 11th June?    [ 23-03-2012 17:45 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Ccult of Mac     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Speculation is starting to mount that Apple could be readying iOS 6 for a spot of unveiling fun come June. Cult of Mac is reporting that the Moscone Center in San Francisco has been booked for a week in mid-June starting on the 11th. Anyone with a even a passing interest in Apple willof course know that Moscone is Apple's venue of choice for its WWDC event. It was at WWDC in 2011 that we first saw iOS 5, which would later ship with the new iPhone 4S. The thinking this year is that Apple will keep the unveiling of a new iPhone for later in the year like they did with the iPhone 4S, but retain the summer unveil for the newly updated operating system.

Apple Overtakes RIM On Hometurf    [ 23-03-2012 16:32 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

RIM isn't exactly a manufacturer that can be said to be in rude health these days for all manner of reasons that would take too long to list in a single post. That decline only got worse, and more humiliating, for RIM as Bloomberg, in conjunction with IDC, reported that Apple had now passed RIM in its own homeland of Canada.

Last year RIM managed to shift 2.08 million BlackBerrys in Canada. Apple, by comparison, sold 2.85 million iPhones. Slipping back in time for a moment to 2010 we see that RIM was outselling the iPhone by a cool half million units each year. Going even further back to 2008, not long after the iPhone first appeared, BlackBerrys were outselling iPhones five to one.

Canada isn't the world's most important wireless market it has to be said, but for RIM it's home. For RIM to be losing its lead in its own backyard is a sign of how weak the company has become. Market share has been dropping south of the border too in the much larger U.S. market. Coupled with poorly received ad campaigns, corporate chaos and products that are either late or uninspiring, it's not difficult to see why Canadians are turning away from RIM.

Samsung Design Chief Speaks On Apple's Copying Claims    [ 23-03-2012 16:19 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung's chief of design has been speaking out about Apple's claims that Samsung is doing nothing more than rippingoff the iPhone and the iPad. Lee Minhyouk, Samsung's vice-president of design, told Reuters that the allegations from Apple that have surfaced in the many courtroom battles betwene the two companies had affected him on a personal level.

I've made thousands of sketches and hundreds of prototype products (for the Galaxy). Does that mean I was putting on a mock show for so long, pretending to be designing? As a designer there's an issue of dignity. (The Galaxy) is original from the beginning, and I'm the one who made it. It's a totally different product with a different design language and different technology infused.

It's an interesting insight into some of the personalities behind the legal drama and also interesting from the point of view of how the people who are coming up with these devices view the proceedings. In that vein Minhyouk made sure to let it be known that he does have respect for Apple, especially its lead designer, Sir Jonny Ive. In what could either be seen as a case of humility or a case of selling Samsung short, Minhyouk said:

I might not be at (Ive's) level yet, but believe Samsung will produce such iconic products one day.
