'Assistant' - Google's Answer To Siri    [ 07-03-2012 16:01 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: TechCrunch     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ever since Siri was unveiled on the iPhone 4S late last year many an Android user has wondered if, and indeed when, Google would roll out similar functionality for Android. It as recently as December that we first heard rumblings about 'Majel', essentially Google's answer to Siri. Now TechCrunch are reporting that Google plans on launching the new service under the name 'Assistant'. If the name lack originality then hopefully the service will make up for it with functionality. The report claims that Google is building Assistant with three clear goals in mind:

  • Put the world's knowledge in a format understandable to a computer
  • Create a personalization layer
  • Create a voice controlled 'do engine', which will be capable of accomplishing real world tasks

Google will apparently make Assistant available to developers in a broader stroke than Apple has done with Siri. This, Google hopes, will mean that functionality is increased. To see whether that comes to pass we'll have to wait for the fourth quarter of this year when Assistant is supposed to launch.

Samsung Launches Yet Another Lawsuit Against Apple    [ 07-03-2012 15:13 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

You have probably heard about the minor legal wrangle between Apple and Samsung that has been ticking along for a year or so now. Across 10 different countries, 30 odd different legal challenges and what must be gobsmacking legal bills, Apple and and Samsung have been duking it out in what may be the biggest patent dispute of our time. Well now Samsung has decided that there aren't enough court proceedings so they have launched another lawsuit against Apple, this time in Samsung's native South Korea. The lawsuit is aimed at the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, which Samsung are alledging infringe upon three of their patents, so called 'utility' patents. These patents related to emthods of displaying content, the UI and short text messages. Will these two crazy kids ever make up?
