RIM Could Be About To Split    [ 25-06-2012 20:30 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Sunday Times, Reuters & Morgan Stanley     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

RIM's position looks increasingly fragile as Morgan Stanley have now downgraded the company's shares to underweight, which essentially means Morgan Stanley think you should ditch the shares if you can. One of Morgan Stanley's analysts, Ehud Gelblum, sent a note to investors summing up RIM's position:

... the only way RIM remains a viable entity is at a fraction of its current size, a transformation that erases much of its earnings power.

Even with BlackBerry 10 on the horizon the company isn't likely to do much ebtter according to those watching the company's progress. Late deployment of the new OS would mean it can't really make any meaningful impact on a market already in love with iOS and Android. Indeed RIM itself is said to be actively considering selling off parts of its business according to The Sunday Times. Apparently both Amazon and Facebook are potentially in the running to gobble up RIM's handset's business, but whether there is actually any serious talking going on between those parties isn't clear. Another rumour is that RIM is considering selling a stake in the company to the likes of Microsoft. That would have the advantage of keeping its software and hardware businesses together at least.
