New iPhone Connector Could Be MagSafe    [ 22-06-2012 17:17 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Scoble     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A big component of the rumour mill surrounding Appe's next geenration iPhone has been the idea that it will incorporate a new connector design. The latest rumour on that front is that the new connector will feature Apple's famed MagSafe technology, more appropriately MagSafe 2 as seen in the new MacBook Pro and Air. Obviously the inclusion of MagSafe would be a nice bonus for the iPhone and it would certainly make it easier to get the thing hooked up in the dark, but there's another side to the rumour.

Apparently, so the rumours go, Apple will be looking to utilise this new connection to exert greater control over what accessories you can use with your iPhone. As things currently stand Apple runs a programme called 'Made for iPhone', which is a licensing programme for iPhone accessories. Obviously people can, and do, use non-licensed accessories. The rumour goes that Apple will be using the new connection to ensure that only licensed cables will actually work with your iPhone. In short Apple will have a lot more control over what exactly you plug into your iPhone.

HTC To Release Three New Win Phone 8 Handsets    [ 22-06-2012 16:54 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: The Verge     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

HTC are gearing up for a three pronged Windows 8 powered assault on the smartphone market according to a roadmap obtained by The Verge. HTC have three Windows 8 smartphone sin the pipeline: the Rio designed for the entry level market; the Accord, which is a mid-range option and the top tier flagship that is the appropriately titled Zenith.

Rio comes packing a 4-inch WVGA display and is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8227 chip and there's a 5 MP camera with 720p video support thrown in for good measure. The Accord sees the specs going up a notch with a 4.3-inch SLCD 2 display; 8 MP camera; the processor moves to a Qualcomm MSM8260A; there is NFC and HSPA+ support and 1 GB of RAM to keep it all ticking. The Zenith, as you would expect, will up the ante again with an even bigger screen, this time a 4.7-inch SLCD 2 effort. The same 8 MP camera as seen in the Accord will feature here, but the processor is supposedly a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon in place of the dual-core found in the Accord.

Release dates are obviously tentative at this stage, but the Rio and the Accord look destined for an October launch whilst the Zenith is a bit more vague with a launch some time in the fourth quarter of the year.

Google To Allow Devs To Respond To Play Store Reviews    [ 22-06-2012 16:14 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Google Developer Blog     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The comments section of an app store is often a place for users to turn to for both recommendations through user reviews as well as a chuckle at some of the comments. However, Google is now changing the long held dynamic that it's the users who get to sound off in this space by opening it up to the developers! Yes indeedy, Google will be giving select devs the ability to respond to user reviews on the Google Play store. Google explained:

User reviews on Google Play are great for helping people discover quality apps and give feedback to developers and potential app users. But what about when developers want to give feedback to their users? Sometimes a user just needs a helping hand, or perhaps a new feature has been added and the developer wants to share the good news.

That's all very optimisitc of Google and no doubt it will be used for such ends. Of course we're all wondering how long it will be before the first flame war between a dev and a user breaks out.
