WSJ: iPad Mini Launching 'Soon'    [ 04-07-2012 18:20 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: WSJ     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Those pesky iPad Mini rumours just won't die and now the Wall Street Journal is getting in on the action too. They are running a report citing the ever infamous anonymous sources close to the issue as reporting that Apple's Asian supply partners are gearing up to begin full scale production come September. Apparently this new tablet will be sporting a display that measures less than 8 inches diagonally. The suppliers themselves are said to include LG Display and AU Optronics and it all comes after the WSJ was running similar reports earlier in the year. Of course many other sources have been feeding the rumour mill with such reports too so either they are all getting the wrong end of the stick or Apple really does have an itsy bitsy tablet waiting in the wings. Some initial rumours on price, even though there isn't even a launch date yet, peg the new device as coming in at somewhere between $249 and $299.

Nexus 7 Trounces Kindle Fire In The Battery Department    [ 04-07-2012 16:18 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: iFixit     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The boffins over at iFixit have managed to get their paws on a Nexus 7, Google new darling of the tablet world, and they've come up with some interesting information. Comparing the Nexus 7 to Amazon's Kindle Fire the Nexus 7 was noticeably better in the battery stakes. The Nexus 7 comes with a 4326 mAh 16 Wh battery, which is smaller than the Kindle Fire's 4400 mAh 16.28 Wh battery. Yet the Nexus 7 was rated at 9:49 hours of life, which is a good two hours more than that offered by the Kindle Fire with its bigger battery. It was a different situation when the Nexus 7 came up against the iPad though. Apple's newest tablet managed to notch up 9:52 hours when using HSPA and 9:37 hours when using LTE. Now that is indeed comparable to the Nexus 7's time, however, it is important to point out that the the newest iPad is packing a much larger battery than the Nexus 7, 11500 mAh 42.5 Wh. The Nexus 7 then would seem to be pretty damned efficient in the battery stakes ... at least until you clog it up with apps.
