Nokia Says It Has A Plan If Windows Phone Flops    [ 02-07-2012 21:50 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia's deal with Microsoft to use Windows Phone has pretty much bet Nokia's future on the success of Microsoft's smartphone operating system. Obviously Nokia hope everything turns out well and that Windows Phone is a success, although it has to be said that current efforts haven't seen much traction for Windows Phone. What if Windows Phone flops though? What will Nokia do? Well we still have no concrete idea, but apparently Nokia does have a secret plan up its sleeve for just such an eventuality.

That was the message given to Finnish television station YLE by Nokia's chairman Risto Siilasmaa. Siilasmaa didn't actually go into the details of what said plan actually involved so that is pure speculation at the moment, but nevertheless there is supposedly a plan there. Of course if Windows Phone were to prove a complete failure there realistically isn't too much Nokia could do as they have thrown in their lot with Microsoft and are pretty much bound to Windows Phone's fate. One option that would be open to them would be to call it a day and sell up to another company. Would that be Microsoft? Possibly, but equally they might get gobbled up by a rival handset maker. Nokia's patent portfolio alone would be an enticing prospect for a potential buyer. Of course this is all speculation as Windows Phone isn't quite at the point of failure ...

iOS Hits New High, BlackBerry Hits New Low    [ 02-07-2012 20:35 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Net Applications     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Market research firm Net Aplications have some new numbers for the smartphone industry available and they show Apple storming up the charts to record its best month ever. The figures show smartphone operating system share and in June Apple's iOS platform notched up its highest ever figure of 65.27%. That comes after a dip in May (62.65%) and means that Apple was by far out in the lead. Google's Android platform also rose, but only slightly to record a hare of 19.73%, up just 0.04% from the May figure of 19.69%. As for RIM the news was, as is usually the case these days, bad. RIM's BlackBerry OS tumbled under 2% for the first time.

The centreal question is of course why? Phone bill too high? Poor customer service? Maybe he just got really pissed off with T-Mobile? Whatever the reason this genteman decided the best course of action was to smash up a T-Mobile store.
