RIM Considering 'Pulling A Nokia'    [ 29-06-2012 16:30 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Reuters     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

You know things have gotten bad at RIM when the company is apparently considering follow Nokia's example. According to Reuters RIM's board of directors are being increasingly pushed towards something drastic to save the company, and one of those options is a partnership with Microsoft that would see RIM launching BlackBerrys with Windows Phone 8 onboard. Apparently Steve Ballmer has been courting RIM in recent months with the intention of pursuing just such an option a la Nokia.

This all comes of course in the wake of RIM announcing that its new BlackBerry 10 OS would be delayed until early next year. Hardly a good sign from a company that looks increasingly 5 minutes from implosion. Thursday this week also saw RIM announcing a big quarterly operating loss and RIM's shares nosedived 18% on the news, and by the end of trading the company's market value had dipped to $4.1 billion. To put that in some context RIM's share price has fallen by about 70% over the past year.

Sources close to RIM, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said that pulling a Nokia was not the prefered option at RIM because it would end RIM's technological independence. Instead the board is apparently willing to pursue BlackBerry 10, but with delays and apprehension over whether BlackBerry 10 will even make any difference to RIM, the board is feeling the heat.

No Flash For Jelly Bean    [ 29-06-2012 14:52 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Adobe     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the things that famously separated Android from iOS in the early days of each OS was that Android had Flash and iOS didn't. Well that's about to change as Adobe will no longer be offering new installations of Flash from 15th August. A statement from Adobe read:

We will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15th.

Google unveiled its latest iteration of Android earlier this week, Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean. Adobe revealed that it hasn't been developing or testing Flash for this new version of Android at all so there will be no "... certified implementations ..." available for it. Adobe will keep up its work on desktop based Flash though.

Google Lining Up Nexus 10?    [ 29-06-2012 14:31 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Nexus 7 might not actually be available to consumers yet, but that hasn't stopped rumours of a Nexus 10 from appearing. According to a DigiTimes report Google is lining up a 10-inch version of its Nexus 7 tablet. Apparently the display panels wil be supplied by Wintek and AU Optronics, the former having already supplied half a million touch panels to Google for the Nexus 7 tablet so that certainly sounds feasible if a Nexus 10 tablet is indeed in the works. Releasing a 10-inch tablet is frought with more risks than the 7-inch Nexus 7 though because 10-inch territory brings Google into direct conflict with Apple's iPad. Most likely Google will wait and see how the Nexus 7 performs first before deciding on whether or not to take on the iPad in its home turf.
