The Loneliest Little Booth At CES    [ 10-01-2012 15:24 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I saw this picture posted over on Gizmodo with the headline 'This BlackBerry Booth Makes Me Sad'. It's not hard to see why they choose that headline. There's something so very pathetic and lonely about that little booth. It almost makes you want to hug Mike Lazaridis.

Video: Fulton Has Wireless Charging In The Bag    [ 10-01-2012 15:20 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the continuing disappointments of smartphones is pretty much everything related to battery life and power. Alongside the meagre lifespan of the battery current smartphones still insist upon having a physical wire plugged into them to charge up, and of course that's so very 20th century. It's great to see then how inductive charging is coming along and this video from Engadget shows off some of the advances being made by Fulton Innovation, a company that has been working pretty hard over the last year to bring wireless charging to the masses. Its technology still isn't quite ready for prime time, but it does at least give an interesting peek at what's to come.

Of particular interest is Fulton Innovation's bag charging 'trick'. You can see, in the video, a mobile being charged from an induction plate even though it is physically inside a handbag. That's pretty sweet when you think about it and opens up some really interesting possibilities. As does Fulton's metal charging solution; the first time inductive charging has been performed through a metal surface. Check out the video below for more:

PlayMemories - Sony's Version Of PhotoStream    [ 10-01-2012 15:09 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: via Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Sony is the latest company to get on the cloud storage/share bandwagon with its PlayMemories service. Imagine Apple's PhotoStream and you'll get the picture here (ho ho ho). PlayMemories basically lets your organise your pictures and videos and hooks up to various bits of Sony kit, from smartphones to tablets to Bravia TVs to Bloggie cams. Anything thus uploaded can be perused at your liesure through your smartphone, TV or tablet.

The PS3 version is going to cost you some cash; around £15 or so. However, the PC, Mac and mobile versions will be free. Why the cost for the PS3 version? Well apparently that's because the PS3 version will have a zuped up interface and will allow for HD video editing. The Android Market and the App Store should see apps appearing soon, as in this month, and initial reports cite the free storage on offer as being in the 20 Gb range although more can be purchased.

Stephen Elop Shouldn't Do Keynotes    [ 10-01-2012 14:56 ]

Author: Oleg Kononosov   Source: Nokia     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

If you couldn't be there in person, or if you're one of those people who just can't get enough of watching Steve ballmer parade around a stage, then you will be pleased to know that Nokia's CES 2012 keynote is now on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. It's a rather odd little keynote; Stephen Elop sounds like a cross between an infomercial and a shop salesman throughout, whilst Ballmer's sole reason for attending is apparently to speak loudly. I have to admit to actually exclaiming out loud when Ballmer came on stage because his bombastic style is just such a contrast to Elop that it actually illicited a chuckle from me. Sadly Elop was far less entertaining. His whole presentation sounded very rehearsed and very much like a cheap sales pitch you would hear if you went to buy a new mobile in a shop. By the time the CEO of AT&T appeared on stage I was ready for the video to end. Thankfully it did.
