Sony Ericsson's German Facebook page have kindly posted an image of one of their forthcoming handsets although they have sadly declined from mentioning exactly which it is. Is it Nozomi? Some other handset? At any rate here it is and it should be seeing the light of day next week at CES.

Some tantalising tidbits from the latest iOS beta release are hinting at the possibility of quad-core chips in the next generation of iOS devices, namely the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5. A reference to "/cores/core.3" was found buried in the processing core-management software. To explain that a little better the current dual-core A5 chip is referenced as "/cores/core.2" whilsy single core chips are referenced to as "/cores/core.0". Both the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 are supposed to launch this year according to most reports so it might not be too long to wait to see a new quad-core A6 chip powering your iPhone.

The Christmas season looks to have been a bumper time for Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, and even RIM's much maligned PlayBook, but not so for the iPad. Data from ad firm Chitika shows that in the lead up to Christmas data usage from the Kinde Fire was growing at about 20% per day. That figure ballooned to more than 120% over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day suggesting a massive activation of the devices given as gifts. RIM's PlayBook also saw a large spike in data usage on Christmas Day with usage shooting up 50% and Samsung's Galaxy Tab saw a more modest, but still significant, increase of 15% on the big day. How did the iPad fare? Its data usage didn't change at all on Christmas Day.
After Christmas Day all four of those tablet lines saw daily increases of between 20-30% in the lead up to 27th December. After that date usage dropped off for all save the PlayBook. That's interesting because it suggests that the other three tablets were probably being used by people going back to work on the 27th whilst the PlayBook, with its heavy discounting, was probably being used more by children and college students with more holiday time.
The big news to take away from all of this though is of course the iPad's unimpressive performance on Christmas Day. The Kindle Fire was being touted as its first real challenge in the tablet space and it looks like it might have been able to pull off something of a coup in the festive period. That doesn't mean that the iPad is down and out of course, it still retains a very hefty lead over its rivals. RIM will no doubt be pleased by the performance of the PlayBook, although it's perhaps a bittersweet success as they've practically had to give it away before anyone took notice.
