Apple Working on 42 & 50-inch TV Designs    [ 04-01-2012 14:00 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: USA Today     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Apple TV rumour mill is starting to ramp up into the usual overdrive that accompanies the launch (or supposed launch) of any new Apple product. Ex-employee leaks, press speculation and even a coment from Woz are the order of the day here. USA Today are citing the afore mentioned Apple employee as saying that Apple's design head honcho Sir Jonny Ive is currently working away on two models of the Apple TV product; a 42-inch version and a 50-inch version. That contradicts earlier reports that said Apple was looking to release more modest units of 32 and 37-inches.

The report did continue the theme of saying that the televisions would feature Siri type controls, support for the seemingly ubiquitous squite of iOS apps, AirPlay, iCloud and of course iTunes. In fact iTunes support is said to be built in on a very deep level. However, it's that focus on content that seems to be the current hinderance to actually releasing the devices. The report claims that Apple is having a spot of bother negotiating deals with the TV industry over content, so much so that the situation is described as a 'major roadblock' for Apple.

Apple apparently wants the sort of free ranging options for customers it already has with music for TV content. However, the TV companies don't appear to be playing ball (yet) even though it could open up new revenue streams for them. They may be worried about Apple extending the sort of dominance it has in digital music distribution to digital television distribution. Even so some are still hopeful, none less so than Woz who commented:

I do expect Apple to make an attempt, since I expect the living room to remain a center for family entertainment, and that touches on all areas of consumer products that Apple is already making.

Android Tops 400k Apps    [ 04-01-2012 13:25 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Distimo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Android passed another milestonover Christmas and New Year: it can now lay claim to more than 400,000 apps. The figures, from research firm Distimo, indicate that the pace of growth for the Android Market is picking up. It took Android 31 months to reach 200,000 apps, but just four months after that it has notched up 300,000 and five months after that here we are at 400,000. By comparison it took Apple 40 months to clock up 400,000 apps, meaning Google is still behind Apple, but only just. It's also telling to note that Android now has more than 100,000 app publishers according to Distimo, and each has, on average, 4.1 apps in the Market.
