A new app based upon Braille is set to help blind people use their touchscreen devices more easily. At least that is the hope of the team from Georgia Tech who are behind the Brailletouch app. The team claims that their system is up to 6 times faster than current methods for inputing text without using sight. Brailletouch is controlled using six finger, but importantly does not require that the hands be moving, which, as lead researcher Mario Romero explained is important:
Users who know how to type Braille well never move their hands. When users hold the phone they hold the phone with the screen facing away from them in landscape mode. They wrap the index, middle and ring finger in each hand around the phone. It's not like the QWERTY keyboard where you move up and down. That's why this thing works - we can get away with only six keys.
Brailletouch will first be released for Apple and Android devices and will be free to download as well as being open source. There is some hope amongst the team that it might even catch on with people who aren't blind as a means to type without the need to look at the screen.
