Leaked Windows Phone 'Tango' Images Show OS Update    [ 16-02-2012 19:08 ]

Microsoft's next Windows Phone release 'Tango' has been receiving the leaked screenshot treatment today. The new version of its mobile OS will apparently feature some new goodies such as the ability to export contacts to the SIM card; multiple attachment support for single MMS messages and domestic and international romaing management. Microsoft is also said to be working on its very own voice recording app for use with MMS.

Alongside this new version of Windows Phone Microsoft are allegedly dropping the hardware requirements they mandate for Windows Phone. Memory, for example, will drop to 256 MB as the minimum whilst the camera specification goes from a minimum of 5 MP to 3 MP. This does play into previous rumours that Tango would only be released for lower end devices, but that still hasn't been confirmed yet.

Android 5 To Bring Fragmentation Back To Android    [ 16-02-2012 18:06 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Google's Android OS, currently makes up just 1% of the total Android devices in use. You might think therefore that Google would be holding back on its next release, but of course Android presses on regardless.  Indeed the next major Android build is being reported to launch as early as next quarter. DigiTimes is citing the ever informative unnamed sources to say that Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) is going to go live in Q2.

Apparently Jelly Bean will be optimised for tablets, a bit like Honeycomb was in the past. This focus on tablets is ostensibly because Google is said to be worried about possible competition from Windows 8. Featured in Jelly Bean will be support for dual-boot functionality, which Google will push from manufacturers in an effort to see Jelly Bean installed alongside Windows 8.

Whilst all this sounds eminently plausible there is some trouble brewing. Some of Google's manufacturing partners are said to be less than pleased with how Android 4 has turned out, especially its slow adoption rate. With that in mind they are apparently 'turning conservative' on Android 5 according to DigiTimes. If that is the case then that horrible word 'fragmentation', which had been starting to fade from the Android landscape may very well be back with a bite.
