iPhones Sales To Slow Until New iPhone Hits    [ 19-04-2012 17:47 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Canaccord     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Apple's mega sales frenzy over the festive period was always going to be hard to sustain, but analyst firm Canaccord are saying that iPhone sales will now be in a continous slowdown until the arrival of the next egenration iPhone. The new iPhone is widely expected to be launched this year with most bets putting the launch window around the quarter three mark. The slowdown in iPhone sales isn't just a prediction, it can be seen in the numbers coming from the likes of networks such as Verizon. Back in Q4 Verizon shifted a very respectable 4.3 million iPhones. That figure dropped to 3.2 million in the first quarter of this year. The slowdown, according to Canaccord will be mostly restricted to the more developed markets like the U.S. and Europe, but once the new iPhone does hit, especially if it has LTE support as is now expected, then Canaccord are predicting 'very strong' demand in December.

Nokia Posts Q1 Results: Sales Down, Big Losses    [ 19-04-2012 17:05 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nokia     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia was already hinting that its first quarter financial results wouldn't be too rosey ahead of announcing their Q1 results. Those results are now out and we can see just how bad things really are ... it's bad folks, very bad. Revenue dropped by a massive 30% to 7.4billion euros, which is down from the 10.4 billion euros Nokia posted for the same time period last year. Nokia posted a loss of 1.3 billion euros, a huge sum of money, which is the equivalent of losing 0.25 euros per share. If the money side of things isn't looking too good then the sales aren't doing much to help either. Sales of smartphones dropped a frankly frightening 52% to 1.7billion units in Q1 whilst net device sales also saw a massive decline of 40% to 4.2 billion units. Reacting to these figures Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop tried to explain the poor performance:

We are navigating through a significant company transition in an industry environment that continues to evolve and shift quickly. Over the last year we have made progress on our new strategy, but we have faced greater than expected competitive challenges. We have launched four Lumia devices ahead of schedule to encouraging awards and popular acclaim. The actual sales results have been mixed. We exceeded expectations in markets including the United States, but establishing momentum in certain markets including the UK has been more challenging.

That's a nice bit of corporate speak for you there, but essentially what Elop is saying is that Nokia, having missed the ball as usual with the smartphone bandwagon, is playing catch-up only the rest of the smartphone industry is releasing products people want more. Furthermore Nokia have focused a great deal of attention on the U.S. market where they have traditionally performed relatively poorly, whilst not giving enough attention to their European homeland where they traditionally saw very good results.

Nokia Head Of Sales Resigns    [ 19-04-2012 17:05 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Nokia     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Following on from Nokia's disastrous Q1 financial results the company's vice president of sales, Colin Giles, is to resign. The resignation will apparently usher in a restructuring of the company's sales team and process with the idea being to simplify things. Giles is a long time Nokia employee having been with the Finnish manufacturer since 1992, but it's only in the last year that he's been part of the leadership team at Nokia, before which he was involved with Nokia's efforts in China and subsequently Asia as a whole. Predictably the usual reasons of wanting to be closer to family were given with Nokia officially stating that the reorganisation process will aim to "... ensure greater customer focus ..." whatever that means. Presumably it has something to do with actually selling more phones.
