The tech industry, especially the smartphone world, is amidst a global patent war if you didn't already know. Companies are suing each other left right and centre and the current nexus of the war is the battle being fought between Apple and HTC as part of the wider Android vs Everyone Else front that is just one part of the ongoing struggle.
So far Apple has been pretty much winning at every turn, forcing HTC on the back foot. Well HTC have launched a fresh offensive and it's thanks to Google. Google's acquisition of Motorola's mobile division brought with it a war chest of patents. The nine patents were originally under the control of Motorola, Palm and Openwave Systems. Wherever they came from the end result is still the same, HTC now has the ability to strike back.
It's also important to remember that Google has promised its backing for its manufacturing partners in their lawsuits with Apple and Microsoft. Here we can see that support in action and if those manufacturing partners had any doubts over Google's Moto deal then this might go some way to reassuring them.

Despite the prevalence of digital devices in our lives these days the trusty old combination of pen and paper is still going strong. Some fresh efforts to bridge the gap were shown off at IFA last week, including this rather interesting effort from Japanese firm Kokuyo. The interesting part comes from the fact that Kukoyo's efforts utilise devices that users already have (sort of).
The technology revolves around the company's CamiApp, which has been released for iOS. an Android version is in the works too. Essentially the app scans and digitizes handwritten information, which can then be manipulated by the user in all the usual digital ways. The apps will be designed to work with specially created notebooks that Kukoyo is set to release. These notebooks will make the capture of the handwriting easier for the app.
