Video: Samsung Bringing Flexible Displays To Mobiles In 2012    [ 28-10-2011 18:53 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Samsung     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung are promising the launch of flexible displays for mobile phones by next year. This isn't quite the same as the existing curved screen on the Galaxy Nexus S, what we're talking about here is a real deal bendable display. As others have commented on the real world application of this technology seems a bit vague at the moment. I can imagine that tablets would ebenfit from it in terms of being able to be folded to make them more compact, but what about a mobile phone? Maybe a clamshell design with one large screen for input/output? Ok, but beyond that why would want to bend your phone's display? At any rate you can check out some of the concepts in the video below (skip ahead to 1:25).

Video: A Tale of Two Videos    [ 28-10-2011 18:52 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Here we have two very different videos by the same company. The first video is pretty awesome so let's look at that first. It's Microsoft's view of the future and it actually looks pretty realistic whilst also being damned awesome. None of the tech on show seems too futuristic in a Star Trek sort of way nor does it look like some perfect vision of technology that would probably be impractical to use. I can actually imagine this sort of stuff coming to fruition and being commercially available.

Ok video number two ... This is from the other end of the Microsoft video spectrum and is actually a little painful to watch in some places. Cheesey? Definitely, but we've come to expect that of Microsoft. For me the most annoying part, and downright weird, is the constant repition of the phrase 'hit song', presumably the girl in the video was on commission to use that phrase. The other, frankly bizarre, utterance is the use of the word 'song', but really stressed to death so it sound slike 'sooooonnnggggg'. As a sign of how bad it is it has actually been removed from YouTube.

Why Steve Jobs Could Drive Without License Plates    [ 28-10-2011 18:51 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Gizmodo     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the most famous of Steve Jobs' quirks was his penchant for driving around in a Mercedes benz SL55 AMG that had no license plates. It's an odd thing to do because every car bought and used has to have a license plate right? Well no ... at least not in California.

Jon Callas, CTO of Entrust, and who also worked as senior security at Apple, explained that Jobs actually rented his cars. You see there is a loophole in Californian law governing license plates. New cars can be driven without a license plate for up to six months although the driver would still have to register the car obviously. Jobs wasn't exactly short of a few bucks so he simply rented a new car once every six months. He struck a deal with a rental company and twice a year he would receive a new Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG.

It's certainly a bit on the convuluted side, but I guess that's what being different takes sometimes.

Bill Gates: Being A Billionaire Is No Big Deal    [ 28-10-2011 18:30 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: http://www.phonearena.com/     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I love this quote from Bill Gates because it's something only an insanely rich person could ever utter:

I can understand wanting to have a million dollars ... but once you get beyond that, I have to tell you, it's the same hamburger

Personally I wouldn't mind being a billionaire, but for those of you sitting on the fence whether to go for a million or a billion you now have the skinny straight from the world's richest man.
