Gartner: Samsung No 1, Android Crosses 50% Mark    [ 15-11-2011 19:20 ]

Gartner's latest figures for the state of the smartphone space aren't throwing up any major curveballs, but nevertheless they're proving interesting. First up is Samsung, which is now the largest smartphone vendor in the world having shipped 24million devices and Samsung was also, for the first time, the number one smartphone vendor in Western Europe, having displaced Nokia. Apple managed to ship 17 million iPhones, a 21% increase year on year, but still down a hefty 3 million units from Q2. Whether Apple manages to recover in Q4 or not is a matter of debate at the moment, but the expectation amongst most is that Q4 should be a bumper season for Cupertino.

As for the platforms themselves the figures arenot wholly unpredictable. Android has stepped over the 50% global market share line. Android's increasing dominance may seem commonplace of late, but it was just last year that Android  had a Q3 global share of 25.3%. Zoom ahead to Q3 2011 and it's doubled to 52.5%. A remarkable achievement.

Some surprises too though as iOS lost a little, down from 16.6% last year to 15% this year. Unsurprisingly RIM continued to loose ground, down from 15.4% last year to 11% this year and with no signs on the horizon that that trend can or will be reversed. Microsoft too saw losses, with its combined Windows Phone and Windows Mobile platforms falling from 2.7% to 1.5%. At least here the entrance of Nokia is expected to make some contribution to reversing these declining fortunes.

The last word goes to Symbian though because it's still hanging in there although in a much reduced form. It enjoyed a 36.3% global share last year, but despite a huge decline it's still commanding a 16.9% share of the global market, more than any other platform save Android. Of course that will likely not be the case for very much longer ...

Samsung Backing Off From South Korean Legal Fight    [ 15-11-2011 19:14 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: 9to5 Mac     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung are backing off from their legal confrontation with Apple in their native South Korea. According to a local newspaper, The Chosun Ilbo, Samsung say that "We concluded that we should engage in legal battles with Apple only in the global market, but not to gain more market share in Korea". Despite this backing off Samsung are still battling Apple in the courts in several countries around the world including Australia, France, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States. Samsung are seeking to have the iPhone 4S banned in both Australia and Japan and has so far succeeded in gaining access to Apple's contract agreements with various Australian networks.
