Analysts Predict Windows Phone To Overtake BlackBerry    [ 25-03-2011 19:24 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Research firm Ovum have been talking about some predictions they have for the smartphone market moving forward to 2016 and it makes nice reading for Google, but not so nice reading for RIM and Nokia.

The central plank of the forecast is a doubling in the smartphone market by 2016 and Ovum predict that this will be led by, and dominated by, Google's Android, which they say should command a 38% market share. That wouldput Android well ahead of the competition as Ovum sees it.

By comparison Apple would hold the number 2 spot with a 17.5% share whilst Windows Phone would take third spot with 17.2%. RIM would be a distant fourth with around 16.5%. If that proves correct it would suggest that whilst Nokia would help propel Microsoft up the rankings the benefit would mostly be in Microsoft's favour given that Nokia currently has a leading role today hence Nokia itself would see a sharp decline in their smartphone dominance.

It may be a double edged sword for Microsoft though as Ovum analyst Adam Leach explains:

For Microsoft the deal provides a committed handset partner that has the potential to make Windows Phone a mainstream smartphone platform. The risk to Microsoft is that other handset makers may choose not to compete with Nokia and may turn their backs on Windows Phone.

Interestingly the forecast also predicts that another platform will manage to break into the mainstream e.g. Bada, webOS, MeeGo, or maybe even something new. One thing is clear enough though, all of this is not fact so please remember don't treat it as such!

Video: iPad & Pad 2 Glass Stress Test    [ 25-03-2011 19:18 ]

Geeks find things other people would consider odd to be entertaining (and informative!) and with that in mind let's take a look at a video from the chaps at iFixYouri showing some stress tests on the screen glass from both the iPad and iPad 2.

The difference between the two is pretty evident with the iPad 2 putting in what can only be described as an impressive showing. Remember, the iPad 2 glass is 27% thinner!

Android Getting In-App Purchases    [ 25-03-2011 19:12 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: via IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Android is a great platform for many people, no doubt about it, but one area where it has always played second fiddle to iOS has been the app store. Simply put Android just hasn't had the same clout and that's in large part down to Google, but the Big G is trying to rectify things with new features and services. One such move is not only bound to please devs, but long long overdue ... in-app purchases!

It's a feature iOS has had for almost two years so it really is high time Android got its act together on this front, especially considering how popular, and lucrative, in-app purchasing can be. Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, for example, report that some 40% of users who are able to have made an in-app purchase. Then of course there is Zynga and its Farmville juggernaut!

Of course there is a downside to this and in Android's case that comes in the form of how to pay. Unlike iOS with its simple one credit card through iTunes model Android is ... well let's be honest here it's a hodge podge at best and a mess at worst. Some  might call it 'choice' that you can use different payment methods on Android e.g. Google Checkout, credit cards, carrier billing, etc, but frankly simplicity is definitely the hottest show in town here.

At any rate it does at least give developers a new avenue of revenue to explore and hopefully that means Android becomes an even more attractive platform to develop content for.

Where's My Update?    [ 25-03-2011 19:01 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Microsoft     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Windows Phone 'NoDo' update is winding its way merrily around the world with unlocked handsets being the first to receive the goodness. Those with a handset locked to a network will unfortunately have to hold off for a bit until their network has had time to check the update. Just the other day we were saying how UK customers with locked handsets were probably looking at April before they got the update.

Well now Microsoft has thrown together a website to help its American customers keep track of what's going on. It's a pretty simply affair really, but it does show how the update is progressing for each handset available. Take a look here.

Video: Samsung Wave Running Froyo    [ 25-03-2011 18:26 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: bada-world     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The Samsung Galaxy Wave's main claim to fame was that it ran Bada, Samsung's very own smartphone OS. It still runs Bada, but some rather smart chaps in Poland have been tinkering away and managed to get Android running on the device!

They ported the 2.2.1 Froyo build found on the Galaxy S (also made by Samsung) using some security flaws and it does indeed run on the Wave. As you might expect there are some issues such as RAM access and so on, but the effort is still under way so hopefully they can iron out the kinks.

You can check out the action in the video below:
