Google Launches Auto-Traffic Routing With Google Maps    [ 08-03-2011 16:59 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google Maps for Android seems to get update at a breakneck pace, you have no sooner downloaded the latest update than another is availabe! The latest is a very handy addition indeed, automatic traffic re-routing.

From today Google Maps will utilise real time traffic updates, as well as calling upon past traffic trend data, to advise you on the best route to take. The idea being to avoid traffic jams and cut journey times. Pretty sweet right?

Unfortunately this feature isn't available everywhere to begin with, just North America and a few European countries to start off with, basically those palces where free navigation already exists.

Opera Launches New Multi-Platform App Store: Opera Mobile Store    [ 08-03-2011 16:34 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Opera     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

App stores are ten a penny these days and as if there weren't enough Opera has thrown its hat into the ring with the launch of the Opera Mobile Store.

The new offering is integrated right into Opera's mobile platform browsers, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, but you can still access it directly at http://mobilestore.opera.com in case you aren't using either of those browsers.

Like ther stores there is a mixture of free and paid for content and the content is aimed at 'virtually any mobile platform and device'. There are various categories for different platforms e.g. Android Plam, etc.

Choice is great, I'm all for that, but you do have to wonder just how many app stores the market can realistically support. Having said that Opera have shown thmselves to be tenacious in the past, especially when it comes to making a success out of their mobile browsers so it wouldn't be prudent to discount them just as they're getting started.

Microsoft Giving Nokia $1 Billion    [ 08-03-2011 16:18 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Bloomberg are reporting what many have already suspected, Microsoft are giving Nokia a large injection of cash as part of the recent partnership deal between the two companies.

Bloomberg cites 'two people with knowledge of the terms' of the deal as saying that $1 billion is being given to Nokia. The deal itself isn't completely finalised, but it allegedly requires Microsoft to stump up some of that money at the beginning with Nokia giving some back as it pays for licenses to use Windows Phone 7.

Another little tidbit to come out of this is that Microsoft will apparently gain access to Nokia's extensive range of patents, or at least parts of its patent catalogue. That's a pretty sweet deal right there. It's not a short term arrangement either with the deal being described as lasting for 'more than five years'

Android Is Number 1 In USA    [ 08-03-2011 15:51 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: ComScore     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Much like the Borg Android seems relentless in its quest to become the dominant smartphone paltform. The most recent ComScore figures for the American market paint a very rosy picture for the little green bot as it is now the leading smartphone platform in the States.

Just three months ago ComScore handed Android second place after showing that it had overtaken iOS and now it has done the same to RIM's BlackBerry OS. Android grew by 7.7% in the period from January, which obviously helped, but significantly RIM saw a decline of 5.4%.

The end result is that Android now controls 31.2% of the American market compared with RIM's 30.4%. Apple's iOS trails in third with 24.7% and Microsoft is a very distant fourth with just 8%. iOS showed next to no growth (0.1%), whilst Microsoft declined 1.7%. Of course these figures aren't reflective of Verizon having recently acquired the iPhone 4 so the next time we see figures from ComScore expect to see iOS showing some growth.
