I forgot to post this up the other day, but if you are interested in watching some Apple execs use a bunch of buzzwords about iOS 5 then you will not want to miss the official Apple iOS 5 overview video:

Video: SkyDrive Demos & Hands-On    [ 08-06-2011 18:00 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: WinRumours     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Talk about the cloud this week and the conversation will invariably turn to Apple, but Microsoft have been showing off their SkyDrive service, which will ship with the Mango update, off in some demo videos. SkyDrive will allow users to do things like share pictures using texts or IMs as well as one button video uploading to the cloud. MS Office documents can be accessed (and edited!) straight from the handset and to cap it all off users get a very agreeable 25 GB storage limit.

For the moment though check out the demo videos below as well as a hands-on video from the chaps at WinRumours.

Joe Belfiore, Win Phone Boss: Thanks Apple For Ripping Us off    [ 08-06-2011 17:50 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The iOS 5 announcement earlier this week will be rememered for two things by two separate groups of people. On the one hand Apple fans will no doubt recall all the amazing new features that were unveiled, but on the other hand anyone who isn't an Apple fan will probably remember all the features copied from other platforms that were unveiled. In the spirit of the latter point of view you would expect some commentary from the likes of Google and RIM ... but it seems Microsoft has beat them to the punch.

Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice-President, Windows Phone Program Management (would hate to have to fit that on a business card!), has been giving his thoughts on Apple's copy/paste approach to new iOS features.

Feeling flattered today. Lots of great WP ideas headed to iOS. (Camera button/above lock, auto-upload of pics, better notifications ...)

Feeling flattered today part 2 ... wi-fi sync, built-in twitter, background download service, short messaging chats (though we do Facebook!)

Ok so it's hardly a cat fight with hair pulling and name calling, but it does show that the other platforms are aware of the situation and despite Joe's words of praise they are probably not terribly happy. Why should they be? They innovate and come up with new features and Apple rips them off! Hold on a minute there though ... a good idea is a good idea and to be frank the average user couldn't care less where the idea comes from, they just want things to work well.

In that regard Apple might be copying, but at least it's copying the right things.

Rumour: Samsung Looking To Buy Nokia?    [ 08-06-2011 17:46 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: WSJ     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia is in the midst of another take over rumour and this time it's Samsung that's allegedly doing the buying! The latest rumour comes via the Wall Street Journal and suggests that the South Korean manufacturer, currently the world's number two, is preparing a bid to purchase Nokia, the world's number one manufacturer.

As you would expect neither Nokia nor Samsung have commented upon the rumour, which really only adds fuel to the fire. It was only recently that our very own Eldar was mentioning the possibility of Microsoft, Nokia's new smartphone partner, snapping up the Finnish phone maker. With the possibility of Samsung now also having thrown its hat into the ring some serious questions might start being asked over Nokia's future.
