Eric Schmidt: Competitors Not Innovating, Have To Resort To Lawsuits    [ 19-07-2011 19:06 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Slashgear     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google's Eric Schmidt has been making some interesting comments on the various legal wranglings that Google finds itself involved with because of its Android smartphone platform. They're the sort of comments we love to hear from CEOs and Mr Schmidt has disappointed us today. Schmidt was speaking at the Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo and summed up the legal situation by saying that "... competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations".

It's a pretty remarkable statement for Schmidt to make and it arguably reveals a sense of frustration that Google has with the likes of Apple. Schmidt didn't mention Apple by name, but given that Apple has been busy suing HTC and Motorola over Android patents it's not a leap to see who his comment is directed towards. Backing that idea up is Schmidt's mention of HTC, saying that Google were committed to the Taiwanese manufacturer and that "... we will make sure they don't lose" (referencing the Apple lawsuit).

There is something else at work here though beyond demonstrating Google's frustration and that is that Google are in this for the long haul. Making bold statements saying that they will back their partners to the hilt is definitely 'fighting talk' and demonstrates Google's willingness to fight for its position in the market, which is looking increasingly rosy with Android rapidly expanding.

Google+ iPhone App Finally Approved    [ 19-07-2011 19:05 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: macstories     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The official Google+ app for the iPhone has apparently shown up in the App Store at long last. At the moment the reports say that it is only the U.S. App Store that is seeing the app available and having checked in the UK store I can confirm that it isn't available to British iPhone users yet.

The app was submitted to Apple for approval over two weeks ago and many have wondered why it has taken so long for it to be approved. Apple are infamous for their mercurial approach to app approval, with some taking far longer than others to be approved. The increasingly bad blood between Google and Apple probably didn't do anything to speed the process up in this case and the popular suggestion is that Apple was merely exercising a degree of petty power over Google.

It could be that the app was approved in due time of course and that Apple was completely objective about the process. Whatever the method behind the approval it seems it is now out and about ready to download ... at least if you live in America. Hopefully the rest of the world won't have too much longer to wait.

UPDATE: The app is indeed available outside America, at least here in the UK. The app isn't showing up in the App Store accessed from the iPhone for me, but it is appearing in the App Store accessed through iTunes.

Facebook Deletes Google+ Advert    [ 19-07-2011 18:28 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: CNET     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Well it hasn't taken long for the bad blood between Google and Facebook to erupt on the shores of Google+. To be more exact it's more a case of Google+ trouble erupting on Facebook. The cafuffle is over an ad placed by developer Michael Lee Johnson advertising his Google+ account. The ad, which Johnson made himself, basically asked people to add him on Google's new social networking service. Sounds pretty mundane right?

Facebook apparently didn't think so as they promptly pulled the ad, as well as Johnson's other ads. CNET published the message Facebook is said o have sent to Johnson:

Your account has been disabled. All of your adverts have been stopped and should not be run again on the site under any circumstances. Generally, we disable an account if too many of its adverts violate our Terms of Use or Advertising guidelines. Unfortunately we cannot provide you with the specific violations that have been deemed abusive. Please review our Terms of Use and Advertising guidelines if you have any further questions.

Johnson, for his part, is apparently considering legal action against Facebook for damage to his reputation and emotional distress. On a broader note though this incident demonstrates two key points: Facebook doesn't like Google+ and is in all likliehood worried by it and secondly that Facebook is not above resorting to what amounts to pretty petty behaviour to combat Google+. Of course we have already seen that sort of action on a grander scale with Facebook having hired a PR company to badmouth Google. This removal of ads can be seen as a sort of extension of that petty mindedness.

Video: Nokia Sea Ray Straight From The Factory    [ 19-07-2011 16:59 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: WPCentral     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The much anticipated Sea Ray, Nokia's first Windows Phone handset has popped up on video straight from the factory floor. You can't get much more fresh than that!

The handset is taken out of what seems to be a camouflaging case before being turned on. The device boots up reasonably quickly it has to be said. The camera is then activated and we can see a short run through of that feature. Then it's all over sadly.

Even though it is a quick look at the handset it is definitely a tantalising look. For those waiting on the arrival of Nokia to the Windows Phone scene this will be sure to whet their appetite.
