Over 2 Million Win Phone 7 Licenses Sold    [ 26-01-2011 21:12 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the most frustrating aspects of the Windows Phone 7 launch is that there has been precious little data to go on to tell how well the platform is doing. Sales figures weren't initially forthcoming and there hasn't been much other information given out either.

Well Microsoft have released some small pieces of information that sheds somem or elight on the platform's success. For example, 'early research' apparently puts 93% of Win Phone 7 customers in the 'satisfied' category with 90% saying that they would recommend Win Phone 7 to a friend. Pretty impressive figures there, but we don't have any details of the research or how it was carried out so it's hard to put those results in a proper context.

A bit more meaningful is the revelation that the Marketplace sees, on average, 100 new apps per day. Granted that that's a far cry from the likes of Android, but it shows activity at least. The Marketplace is said to have a total of around 6,500 apps, which isn't a bad figure really really given the size of app stores beyond the 'big two'.

The last piece of information concerns sales, which now total over 2 million licenses to OEMs around the world.  Microsoft still seems less than keen to reveal the actual sales figures to the public, instead focusing on how many licenses its partners have bought. Granted that this gives an estimate of Win Phone 7's popularity, but it still doesn't show exactly how many customers are buying into the platform.

Nokia Chairman Wanted Vanjoki As CEO, Picked Elop After Investor Threats    [ 26-01-2011 20:56 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Kauppalehti     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Kauppalehti, a Finnish news site, is reporting that the installation of new Nokia CEO Stephen Elop wasn't the smooth transition that Nokia might like to say it was.

Nokia's chairman, Jorma Ollila, according to the report, began to look for a suitable replacement for Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, whom he had put in charge back in 2006, sometime in the spring of last year. This search was pretty much a formality though as Ollila had settled on Anssi Vanjoki as the next CEO, but it was not to be.

Apparently some of Nokia's American investors were less than happy with the choice of Vanjoki as the next CEO and Ollila was threatened with the sack unless he picked someone else. This is where it gets a little strange, because Ollila stated that he would be stepping down from Nokia's board in 2012 anyway. Either way Elop was installed as the new CEO and Vanjoki promptly resigned because of it.

A little footnote in history perhaps, but one has to wonder what direction Nokia might have taken under Vanjoki?

Preview: Sony Ericsson Xperia play    [ 26-01-2011 20:48 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Engadget have posted up a pretty extensive preview of the forthcoming PlayStation phone. The preview examines various aspects of the phone, from the software to the camera and it's not too far short of a full blown review.

On the whole Engadget seems to have been pretty pleased with it, even though it is a prototype. They do acknowledge that questions like pricing and and so on are still to be addressed, but the preview is more focused on the hardware than it is marketing issues.

Head on over to Engadget to read the full review and take a gander at the pictures and more video.
