Facebook Launching New App For Feature Phones    [ 20-01-2011 19:14 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With the high-end of the mobile market being largely centred around smartphones and their apps these days it's pretty easy to forget about the trusty old feature phone, the staple of the mobile world as it were.

Well Facebook hasn't forgotten about as it's just released a new app designed for non-smartphones. The app was designed in conjunction with Snaptu and it is claimed it will work on more than 2,500 different devices.

The app provides a better Facebook experience for our most popular features, including an easier-to-navigate home screen, contact synchronization, and fast scrolling of photos and friend updates.

That's pretty much what you would expect from the app of course, but the real killer is that Facebook has been partnering up with various networks around the world to make sure that using this app is free, at least for the first 90 days. That total is up to 14 now, hopefully more get onboard.

Sony Ericsson Ships 9 Million Android Phones, Fails To Beat Market Expectations    [ 20-01-2011 18:55 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Sony Ericsson     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The fourth quarter financial results are in and it's looking good, well sort of, for Sony Ericsson.

Ok let's start with the good news first. They have sold 9 million Android Xperia handsets since the first Xperia handset to use Android launched. Pretty impressive stuff, especially given the problems and bad publicity that arose from those handsets being saddled with a version of Android that was two generations out of date when the handsets launched.

It's important to note though that the 9 million figure quoted is for handsets sold to retailers, not to customers. Even so it's still a pretty good sign for Sony Ericsson.

Moving onto the bad news the pre-tax profit for Q4 was a rather meagre 35 million euros. Ok so making 35 million quid isn't exactly bad, but it did fall short of the market's expectations. However, Sony Ericsson are putting a nice glossy shine on this by making the astute point that this still represents the fourth consecutive quarter that the company has actually turned a profit at all.

Video: Awkward Multi-touch Gestures Coming To iPhone?    [ 20-01-2011 18:17 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget & BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With multi-touch gestures for multitasking making their way to the iPad in iOS update 4.3 what is definitely more surpising is that they also seem to be making their way to the iPhone.

I say susrprising because some of the gestures just don't seem to fit with the iPhone, quite literally in some cases. For example, a four finger swipe on the iPad is a pretty straightforward gesture and you have plenty of screen real estate to do it in. Move that gesture to the iPhone though and you are operating with far less screen space so the gesture becomes, well awkward really.

BGR got their hands on some slides that indicate these gestures are being tested out on the iPhone internally within Apple so there would definitely seem to be some traction on bringing these gestures to the device. Hopefully the testing shows just how awakward these movements will be on a phone though.

You can see for yourself in the video below:

HTC Tablet 'The Flyer' To Make March Debut    [ 20-01-2011 18:11 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Taiwanese tech sheet DigiTimes is reporting that HTC will be rolling out their very first tablet device this quarter with a view to getting it into the shops ahead of tablets from some of the other big players.

The tablet, which will apparently be known as 'the Flyer', didn't have its hardware detailed in the report so it is still pure speculation as to what it will ship with. Some seem to think that it will be pretty much a ballooned up version of a HTC Desire, whilst others are hoping for some beefy specs like a Tegra 2 core or super high-res display.

Whatever the hardware may be it should be shipping with Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and then receive an update to Honeycomb somewhere down the line.

In terms of the launch very late Q1 or right on the Q2 divide are thought to be in the right ballpark, so pretty much March. DigiTimes are saying that their sources point to HTC wanting to beat the Motorola XOOM and the RIM PlayBook to market.

The report also mentions that HTC are working on two more tablet devices, both running Honeycomb, that will apparently be unveiled in June.
