Video: MegaReader For iPhone Lets You Walk & Read (If You Want To That Is)    [ 19-01-2011 19:18 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

E-reader apps are pretty much ten a penny these days, but MegaReader or the iPhone has added rather spiffy new feature that mimicks the Galaxy S' ability to overlay text on a live view from the handset's camera.

Basically the app makes the iPhone 'transparent' in so far as text is displayed on a backdrop of whatever the iPhone's camera can currently see thus allowing you read and walk at the same time. Useful? Probably not to be honest, but novel nonetheless.

Uncensored PlayBoy Coming To Apple App Store    [ 19-01-2011 19:00 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: PC Mag     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

"Big news! Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March". That was the info from none other than High Heffner himself (or whomever manages his Twitter account).

PlayBoy is already available through the app store so what's the big deal? These will be uncensored issues in all their bare flesh glory. Now some may think me shallow for posting a story like this, but there is a serious point here too (really there is) because allowing uncensored adult content into the app store hasn't exactly been something Apple has been keen on doing so it suggests that Apple is relaxing its policies somewhat.

In the past Apple has taken a pretty strict line when it comes to adult content so this could represent a watershed in iOS allowing more adult apps through their approval process. Of course it could also be a one off, the app approval process is notoriously fickle with some apps being banned for no good reason whilst others that probably should have been banned in the first place are given the green light.

It might also be the case that Apple feels more comfortable allowing adult content from well known organisations that are perhaps more accountable should any problems arise.

There is also the iOS 4.3 update looming, which might bring a change in developer terms to allow for more adult content with more safeguards to make sure only adults can access it.

Whatever the case may be just remember that the articles in PlayBoy are definitely worth reading too!

Samsung Teaser Kicks Off Next Gen Galaxy S    [ 19-01-2011 18:53 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Android Central     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Samsung have released a teaser poster for the next generation of its popular Galaxy S device, a device that will most likely support 4G.

The poster shows the Galaxy S alongside an obscured handset with the tag line 'Evolution is Fate'. LTE of course stands for 'Long Term Evolution'. A tenous connection? Perhaps, but consider that the Samsung Infuse 4G that was debuted at CES doesn't yet have a global counterpart. It's not too much of a stretch of the imgination to suggest that what we have here is that counterpart.

There is also some talk of whatever the new handset is not being powered by Samsung's own Orion chipset, but rather a dual core Tegra 2. This particular rumour comes about through the fact that NVIDIA have said that both Motorola and Samsung will be big customers moving forwards thus we have the talk of Tegra 2 action in Samsug handsets.

Another teaaser is promised for 1st February and with the handset due to be unveiled on 13th February that would place it nicely at MWC.

HP Tablets: Opal & Topaz - Cloud Storage, Wireless Charging, Tap-To-Share Device Integration    [ 19-01-2011 18:11 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With HP/Palm just a few weeks away from their 9th February event in San Francisco that looks to herald the appearance of two new webOS tablet devices Engadget have been getting the low down on said devices.

The two tablets are apparently called 'Topaz' and 'Opal', presumably codenames, with Topaz being the larger of the two at 241x190x13mm, which is pretty much identical to the iPad's dimensions. Opal is the smaller of the two tablets at 180x144x13mm, which is shorter, but wider, than Samsung's Galaxy Tab. Opal is expected to launch first, Topaz perhaps being as much as three months later to the shops.

The tablets will feature what HP are calling 'premium audio', which Engadget are saying will mean the tablets will feature HP's Beats audio processing technology. The tablets are also said to come with 'tens of gigabytes' of cloud based storage.

Now whilst we're on the subject of cloud based storage this is where these tablets get really interesting if Engadget's report is to be believed. Engadget received an anonymous tip about a consumer survey conducted by a research company in North America, which is strongly suspected of being on behalf of HP. The survey reveals some rather interesting features that might creep into these tablets, features like 'Tap-to-Share'.

Tap-to-Share does pretty much what it says on the tin, you tap two supported devices together e.g. a phone and a tablet and you can seamlessly transfer a song, document, website or whatever. Think Bump, but built right into the device.

That also ties in with a slide Engadget got their hands on detailing an ability to move content experiences between devices. That should, in theory at least anyway, allow you to switch between devices without any loss of content. Apps, saved app states and documents could perhaps be launched from the cloud so in the end it wouldn't matter what device you were using. Of course this last part is still speculation at the moment, we don't know exactly how far reaching the concept will be advanced in these tablets.

The survey also throws up some other gems like the possibility of using your tablet to answer your phone when it rings and cloud based music storage.

Last, but not least, and not really unexpected when one considers it was one of the defining features of the Palm Pre, the tablets look to be shipping with inductive based wireless charging support. The dock used for charging should also double up the tablet as a picture frame, alarm clock and GPS unit.

In terms of launch dates the slide above provides us with some dates with Wi-Fi  and 3G versions of Opal looking set to launch in Europe and North America come September and LTE enabled versions seeing a staggered release in North America from September 2011 for Verizon to June 2012 for AT&T. As you will see from the slide there is no word on LTE enabled versions launching in Europe although that will obviously depend upon when European networks roll out full LTE service to their customers.

All we have to do now is wait for the 9th February and see how much of this pans out.
