Apple Exending Subscriptions To All Content Providers    [ 15-02-2011 21:37 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The subscription service seen in the iPad only newspaper 'The Daily' is to be rolled out to other publications Apple have confirmed.

The decision to extend the system to other content vendors is no doubt in the hope of attracting more providers willing to release iPad specific content. The publishers themselves will have control over subscription price and length and customers will be able to activate those subscriptions with a single click.

Like the rest of the content in the app store though subscriptions will be subject to the 30% levy Apple imposes. App developers have had to pay it and so too will content providers hoping to attract iOS users. How much that may put some of them off remains to be seen, but certainly many won't be used to sharing their revenue like that.

The thing is though, Apple have a proven track record of holding onto customers and those customers are very busy bees indeed when it comes to using the app store and iTunes. That's a pretty convincing proposition for anyone, even if 30% of their take goes to Cupertino

Apple Testing Multiple Prototypes?    [ 15-02-2011 21:32 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Apple.pro & DigiTimes     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With rumours of a smaller iPhone doing the rounds Taiwanese website Apple.pro has come out with information stating that Apple has in fact been testing three different handset prototypes.

One prototype is said to feature a slide out keyboard whilst the other handsets are said to feature the same basic design as the current models, but feature upgraded internal hardware, including an 8 MP camera. Of course it is wise to point out here that even if these prototypes actually exist some, or even none, of them may never see the light of day. They could be simply for the purpose of testing out potential technologies to be used in future products rather than something headed for commercial deployment.

Whilst we're on the subject of iPhone 5 rumours DigiTimes, that other Taiwanese rumour stalwart, is saying that the next iPhone will sport a 4 inch display, which would be an increase over previous models and see the iPhone take a more even footing in that department with regards to some of the newer Android devices.

Android Users Browse Most    [ 15-02-2011 21:05 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: cellular-news     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some interesting statistics coming out of GfK Network Intelligence show some surprising trends in browsing habits amongst smartphone users.

Many may have assumed that iPhone users were the most frequent broswers, but it seems that it's the Android crowd that doing the most surfing, visiting, on average 9.1 websites per day on their device. The iPhone comes in second with 8 websites per day and Blackberry brings up the rear in third place with 5.7 websites per day. Symbian, the proverbial dinosaur in the room, manages to clock up just 5.2 websites per day. That's so low in fact that GfK commented on how it seemed more akin to dumbphone usage than smartphone usage.

Social networks proved illuminating too because the positions were reversed. Symbian users were the most likely to be visiting Facebook, for example, with a 24% chance of Facebook being the current website they were looking at. That chance falls to 17% for iPhone users, 16% for Blackberry users and just 13% for Android users. The discrepancy of course comes from the fact that the likes of Android et al have good Facebook apps available and thus users don't have to use the browser to access it. Symbian on the other hand relies more on third party Facebook apps and they aren't as polished.

How Do You Make Ice Cream? Add Honeycomb To Gingerbread!    [ 15-02-2011 20:56 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

With Honeycomb being aimed squarely at tablets and Gingerbread being given over to phones you could be forgiven for getting a bit confused over exactly what is going on with Android. Well Eric Schmidt has cleared some of the fog in remarks made during his keynote at MWC.

The next major iteration of Android, Ice Cream, will be a combination of Honeycomb and Gingerbread. In the real world honeycomb and gingerbread would definitely not be a good recipe for ice cream, but this is Google and so the recipe is looking pretty delish. The display size discrepancy between tablets and phones might have proved a problem in combining the two Android versions, but Google's own Fragmnets UI will come to the rescue there.

Schmidt didn't have much to say about a release window, just that updates were coming along every six months or so.
