Android 2.4 Coming In April?    [ 07-02-2011 14:39 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Pocket-lint     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

ViewSonic have confirmed to Pocket-lint that their ViewPad 4 smartphone will be launching in April, but also that it will be shipping with Android 2.4. Yes that does mean there will be a new version of Android come April, but it won't be Ice Cream.

Version 2.4 will in fact be called Gingerbread, just like the current 2.3 version. The only real difference between versions 2.3 and 2.4 will be that 2.4 brings support for apps designed to take advantage of multi-core processors to devices with a single core. According to Pocket-lint the launch of 2.4 has been brought forward to take advantage of apps written for Honeycomb (Android 3.0).

So in essence 2.4 isn't really a new version of Android, more like a quick update to ensure compatability with apps. Ice Cream, the next major update for Android smarphones will still likely launch some time later in the year with some estimates placing it as early as the summer

Nokia E6 Pops Up On Web    [ 07-02-2011 13:57 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The still to be announced Nokia  E6 has made an appearance on the interwebz with the resultant expectation being that it will shortly appear, officially, at MWC in Barcelona.

It looks similar to previous E series handsets such as the E71 although with a large amount of space underneath the QWERTY keyboard, which has led to some speculation that this might be a touch input surface. That's unconfirmed for the time being, but what is known is that the screen is a 640x480 VGA effort, the handsetis running Symbian^3, an 8 MP camera and there is HSPA support.

There had been some talk that the E6 would feature a touchscreen, but the photos that have cropped up don't lend that theory much support although to be fair they don't explicitly rule it out either. Perhaps the space at the bottom is indeed a touch input pad and it's been confused with a touchscreen in the rumours?

At any rate it's not an unsafe bet to imagine we'll be seeing this appear in Spain soon.
