Galaxy Tab Return Rate Less Than 2%    [ 03-02-2011 18:27 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Back on Monday research firm ITG claimed that the Galaxy Tab was seeing return rates as high as 15% and compared that unfavourably with the iPad's return rate of 2%. Pretty bad news for Samsung right? Well it would be if the numbers ITG's report were based upon weren't so flawed.

For one thing they only looked at a single third party retailer for the iPad, Verizon, one of the big networks in the U.S. In response Samsung issued a statement today to clarify the matter:

"The return rate of the Galaxy Tab in the US as claimed by an North American market research firm is incorrect. According to Samsung Electronics Mobile Communications Business the return rate is below 2 percent".

Nokia Spends More On R&D Than Anyone Else    [ 03-02-2011 17:34 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: AllThingsDigitial     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The regular reader will know of my love affair with all things statistical and infographical so it should come as no surprise that I scour the web for interesting data sets. Today I found the graph below:

It's a breakdown of the R&D spend from some of the world's biggest mobile manufacturers. Now that would be interesting in and of itself, but look at Nokia's position on the chart, it's way way way out in front of all the rest. In 2010 Nokia spent over $4 billion on R&D. The closest anyone else got was Samsung with £ billion, a full billion less than the Finns.

The most obvious question to ask in response to this graph is where the hell this money is going? Nokia hasn't exactly been setting the world alight recently with its products so just what is it doing with all that R&D money? Let's hope that it's not being sunk into Symbian, but rather something that actually has a shot of creating some real buzz and excitement for Nokia.

Dual Core HTC Pyramid Set For May Launch?    [ 03-02-2011 15:12 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Android And Me     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

MWC is just around the corner and as you would expect the rumours are starting to fly ... today we have the HTC Pyramid.

The Pyramid looks set to feature a dual-core Snapdragon running at 1.2 Ghz with a 4.3 inch qHD display and seemingly T-Mobile have already picked up the option with a release set for as early as May. A quick point about the display, with a qHD screen there is some talk of it being 960x540 since that's what Motorola have gone with.

The chipset being used ties in nicely with what was seen back at CES in las Vegas where Qualcoom demoed their dual-core MSM8x60 with the prospect of of availability being somewhere in Q2. That would fit nicely with a May launch window for the Pyramid. There are still unanswered questions over dual-core chips for Android of course, questions like whether the battery life is going to come in for a hammering and just how optimised Android is to make use of two cores.

There is some speculation as to whether the Pyramid is the successor to the Desire HD. If it is then the Desire HD, which was launched in September 2010 will have had the limelight for just 8 months or so. That seems rather shot even by the fast pace of the smartphone world, but then again it is a fast paced world

PlayStation Phone Leaks Become Desperate: Retail Stands Pictured    [ 03-02-2011 11:24 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: AllAboutPhones via SE-NSE     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

I like leaks as much as the next tech blogger, but you know a leak has run its course when there is nothing left to leak about the handset itself and instead attention turns to merchandising material. That is now the case with the PlayStation phone, the Xperia Play.

AllAboutPhones have got their hands on renders of the display stands that will be sent out to retail partners to help promote the handset. Yes there are indeed Xperia arcs on top of those stands, but they are apparently genuine representations nonetheless. You will also notice the slogan on the stands: 'Smart Phone, Smart Gaming'.
