Chrome 15 Nudges IE 8 Out Of The Way    [ 22-12-2011 20:29 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: StatCounter     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

They've only gone and done it! Google have seen their Chrome 15 browser become the world's most popular browser build after it narrowly overtook Internet Explorer 8 in recent figures from StatCounter. The numbers show a 23.6% global share for Chrome 15 compared with 23.5% for IE 8. That's a cigarette paper's width granted, but it is still a lead for Chrome 15.

StatCounter had been observing Chrome 14 and Chrome 15 overtaking IE 8 at weekends for some time, but during the standard working week IE 8 had always forged ahead again. However, in the week starting on 5th December Chrome 15 overtook IE 8 for the first time.

Now to put all of this into some sort of context it is important to point out that Internet Explorer does still remain the most popular browser in the world when all the various builds are aggregated. Even so this result underlines a trend that shows little sign of reversing, namely that Internet Explorer is losing ground to other browsers. That Chrome 15 can overtake it during the working week suggests that companies are picking up the pace in installing and using alternatives to Internet Explorer, in this case Chrome.

SE LT28at - SE's New 'Superphone'    [ 22-12-2011 18:41 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Bluetooth SIG     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Sony Ericsson (soon to be just Sony) are no strangers to the 'super phone' rumour territory. I can't remember how many times in the past rumours have appeared suggesting that Sony Ericsson was preparing some earth shattering device that would smash the industry apart, deliver hot girls to us, and make it rain strawberry milkshakes. Well here we are again …

A filing with the Bluetooth SIG for device certification has thrown up the Sony Ericsson LT28at. Haven't heard of that one yet? That's not surprising, no one has. At any rate the certification filing has thrown up some interesting specifications for this unknown device:

  • LTE
  • 4.55 inch screen
  • 720p HD Reality display
  • 13 MP rear camera
  • LED Flash
  • Front facing camera with 720p HD video recording

Sounds good right? Well Sony Ericsson are apparently planning for this little sweetheart to be a 'superphone'. Can they finally produce the goods and bring out a market busting phone? CES may have the answers.

Spotify Available For BlackBerry (Sort Of)    [ 22-12-2011 18:35 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: BGR     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

BlackBerry users can at long last get their paws on Spotify! The service has been available for iPhone and Android users for a while now and works pretty well on both platforms. The iPhone app in particular is pretty smooth. It was perhaps a little annoying then that BlackBerry users couldn't get in on the action. Well all that's changed now … well actually that's not entirely true.

Like most stories about BlackBerry these days there is a downside. The Spotify app is available for just five models of BlackBerry: Bold 9780, Bold 9700, Bold 9000, Curve 9300 and the Curve 8520. That list means that CDMA BlackBerry users are completely left out, at least until Spotify gets around to them.
