South Korean Government OS Project Reveals Samsung Not Happy With Google-Moto Deal    [ 24-08-2011 18:14 ]

Rumblings from the South Korean government suggest that some cracks might be appearing in the otherwise rosy lovefest that followed the announcement of Google's deal to buy Motorola Mobility. In the wake of the announcement Android manufacturers were practically queuing up to congratulate Google on the move and to say how pleased they were that this would help protect the Android community from the recent patent wars. However, all is not quite as chummy as it would appear if comments from a South Korean minister are to be believed.

Kim Jae-hong, the deputy minister for knowledge and economy said on Monday this week:

We plan to develop Korea's own web-based operating systems by forming a consortium of local companies. We will forge ahead in developing a new kind of operating system, which is being seen as a next-generation product, in order to build the kind of advantage we do not enjoy in the market for smartphones and tablet PCs, which is dominated by Google and Apple.

Now that is worth talking about in itself, but where things get interesting is when Mr Kim said that Samsung was part of the consortium, but had initially been very negative about it, changing its attitude 'greatly' after the Google-Motorola deal was announced.

In public Samsung is supportive of the Google-Moto deal, and to be fair this is probably not all disingenuous. After all Samsung is currently locked in a patent dispute with Apple and has had several of its products banned from sale as a result. If Google can help to beat back such attacks I'm sure we won't see Samsung complaining. However, if Samsung has suddenly had a change of heart about collaborating on a project, which has the intended aim of taking a bit of the wind out of the sails of both Google and Apple, and if that change of heart did come about because of the Motorola acquisition then it says something about how they really feel.

Micrsoft Confirms Tango For Lower-End Devices    [ 24-08-2011 16:52 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There have already been a few rumblings about what will come after Mango for Windows Phone. The two names being bandied around are Apollo and Tango. Apollo is widely expected to be a major upgrade to the platform and some say will be known as Windows Phone 8. Tango on the other hand was touted as more of a minor update and not intended for everyone. Microsoft have today confirmed that assumption.

Tango will be targeted at developing markets such as China, India and so forth. That also means that Tango handsets are likely to be towards the lower end of the spectrum to fit in with those markets' demographics. It's not a surprising move really given that Android has beena ble to make inroads in those markets given its versatile approach. However, Windows Phone started off with a fairly rigid strategy of mandating a minimum level for devices. Does this now mean Microsoft are prepared to fragment their platform more in the interets of pursuing a wider market?

Dutch Court Bans Sales of Galaxy S, S II and Ace    [ 24-08-2011 16:38 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: via Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Some high drama (well drama) in the Apple vs Samsung patent dispute today. A Dutch court has ruled that Samsung's Galaxy S, S II and Ace smartphones will be banned from sale starting on 15th October. That may seem like a clear cut verdict in Apple's favour, but there's abit more to it.

The court found that Samsung had violated patent 2,059,868, a patent covering scrolling methods. However, the court also found that Samsung did not violate patent 2,098,948, which is to do with "recording a flag in connection with multiple screen taps" or indeed patent 1,964,022, which covers slider drags too unlock a smartphone. Furthermore the court ruled that patent 1,964,022 is now null and void. That means Apple can no longer use this patent to make claims in the Netherlands where the court is based.

The one patent Samsung was found to infringe doesn't cover the Galaxy Tab 10.1 so that device hasn't been included in the sales ban. For those handsets included in the ban Samsung are allegedly set to replace the software in question on thos phones, namely the Gallery application. Doing so should allow Samsung to keep selling the handsets.
