Samsung are gearing up for a massive launch event for the Galaxy S II i900. Like the original Galaxy S Samsung wants a huge launch taking in as many people as possible and to that end the plan is to launch the Galaxy S II in 120 countries on 140 different mobile networks. The handset is already available in South Korea on three different networks.
With such a big launch involving so many networks Samsung are predictably hoping for some success in sales figures with the expectation being that 'at least 10 million' units will be sold globally. That would match the level of success enjoyed the original Galaxy, which was on of last year's biggest selling handsets.

This isn't exactly mobile related so file it under the heading 'damned cool so I'm going to post it anyway!'. Before we get to exactly what Microsoft employee Salvador Patuel did let's look at why. Yes I know that's a bit counter intuitive, but all will be explained in due course! Patuel explains:
I have a private pilot license, obtained 15 years ago, always loved flying and had the opportunity to fly on several different birds, from single piston to multi turbo-prop engines. I have flown several jet planes on real simulators and I try to fly at least once a month on the B737 simulator at British Airways. My wife does not like me flying, as she is quite afraid of flying. When we got married she asked me to fly less hours so I tried to negotiate a win-win situation, I said to her 'Ok, but can I develop my flight simulator in my studio?' She obviously answered yes, thinking that I was going to buy some kind of joystick and a bigger monitor.
Yes that's right folks Mr Patuel built himself a replica of a Boeing 737 cockpit in his house!

Android's meteoric rise to the top of the smartphone game is well documented in terms of the number of handsets sold and the increasing marketshare it commands, but of course the Android Market has been making big gains too. Just how big those gains are can be seen in the latest set of results released by Distimo in their report of app store figures. The headline here is that Android has overtaken the iPhone as the largest provider of free apps.
Just last summer Android already had a larger percentage of its app free compared with the iPhone, but now that lead also includes absolute numbers with the figures for March showing Android having 12,500 more freep apps than iOS. It's not just free apps that Android is increasing in though; Distimo predicts that Android will have the largest app store by volume of apps within five months, unseating the iPhone from its long held number one spot.
Nokia's Ovi Store and RIM's BlackBerry App World are fighting it out for the number three spot in Distimo's results with Ovi slightly in the lead. Windows Phone looks to have made big inroads since its launch late last year, having overtaken webOS and coming in at a respectable fourth position. Still both Android and iOS are clearly the frontrunners, both with app numbers numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
