TweetDeck for Android is finally out of beta and into the Market for all to enjoy! It's not got quite the same rich feature set as the more familiar desktop client, but nevertheless it does offer good functionality albeit without the iconic multiple column approach. Instead the Android app merges different streams into one so as to offer you a single united feed of all your social media goings on e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Google Buzz. The app is free so you can pop along to the Market this very minute and give it a bash yourself.
For those who either don't have an Android handset or who are too lazy to try it out take a gander at the video below to see what all the fuss is about:

Whilst Microsoft have impressed many with their new Windows Phone 7 platform one researcher at least is warning that whilst the platform may have its appeal, it might be just too expensive to succeed. Carolina Milanesi, with analyst firm Gartner, was quick to point out that the new mobile OS does have its appeal and that it is a 'good effort' from Microsoft. However, she did stress that if Microsoft wanted to grow their marketshare they would have to compete with Android and that would mean a lower average selling price.
Android has become the fastest growing smartphone OS and is poised to dominate the smartphone segment of the mobile space within a few years. That spectacular growth has come about through selling to a variety of price points, not just the higher-end of the market. Indeed the higher-end is pretty crowded what with a range of products running Android as well as devices like the iPhone.
Milanesi was quick to point this out, "At launch starting out with high-end devices will guarantee a higher level of appeal and help drive on the visceral appeal. However, in order to grow share Microsoft will have to come down on ASP to be able to compete more directly with Android-based products."
Windows Phone 7 has just launched so it's still far too early to tell what impact the new platform will have. We should be able to tell relatively quickly if the platform has been successful in terms of capturing mindshare, but it's going to be a longer road to travel before we can ascertain how successfully it's worked itself into the present order.

Expectations are running high that Opera Mobile will soon be coming to Android and would follow on from the launch of Opera Mini for Android some months back. Compatability shouldn't be an issue, all builds, or at the very least as far back as Donut (Android 1.6), should be supported. Opera Mobile will be shipping with hardware acceleration and pinch zooming. There isn't an exact date set for the launch yet, but Opera are saying we should expect it within a month's time so keep your eye's peeled both on Opera's own website and in the Market.
