This story has a somewhat tangential link to mobile phones, but given how cool this is that's excuse enough for me to post it! The story is that a father and son team from America sent a capsule into space and sent an iPhone along with it to use as a GPS tracking device. It took a team, including the father and his son, from the Brooklyn Space Program eight months to get the launch ready and they had to meet all sorts of regulations as you would expect.
The balloon managed to climb to 100,00 feet above the Earth and was subjected to conditions like -60 C temperatures, 100 mph winds and once the balloon had burst the capsule plummeted back towards the ground at 150 mph. The camera the team used to record the journey, a Go Pro Hero HD, bit the bullet shortly before touchdown, but amazingly the plucky little iPhone survived the journey to space and back. There was no word on whether it managed to hold a signal up there.

Bad news everyone! The Desire HD and Desire Z have had their launches put back, but at least it's only by a few weeks. Various online stores are reporting that two HTC handsets failed to win approval from Google, the reason not being given. Whilst Android is indeed an open system, manufactures have to appease the gods at the Googleplex if they want to put a Google logo on their handset or use Google's services. Interestingly enough the same thing happened when HTC was getting ready to launch the original Desire. The Desire essentially being a re-badged Nexus One.
At any rate the extra wait shouldn't be too long and it's not as if HTC makes a habit of delaying products for months on end like ... oh say ... Sony Ericsson or indeed most of the 'old guard' of manufacturers. A few more weeks is a small price to pay for some more uber devices in the mould of the Desire.

Today's big news if of course the launch of Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft have done their best to hit the ground running. They've unveiled nine handsets that will kickstart the platform and they have also revealed that thye have some 30 network partners around the world so far. European customers will be able to get their hands on the new handsets come 21st October, and Americans a short while later in early November.
Let's start with the handsets first:
It's certainly a bigger lineup than Android had when it launched back in 2007 with just a single handset, the G1. Adding to that choice is the number of networks that these handsets will be available on around the world.
Not every network will be getting every handset it should be pointed out.
