EU Sets Its Sights On Google    [ 30-11-2010 17:56 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Bloomberg     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The European Commission is not known for shying away from a fight and it's set its sights squarely on Google.

The Commission will respond to allegations that Google is abusing its dominant position by imposing "... exclusivity obligations on advertising partners." In layman's terms what that means is that companies like Microsoft (no stranger to the EU Commission itself) have complained that Google is preventing partner sites from placing ads for 'competing services' on their websites. UK based price comparison site Foundem goes as far as saying Google is 'stifling innovation'.

Google came out with a nice bland corporate statement in response, saying "There’s always going to be room for improvement and so we’ll be working with the commission to address any concerns."

If the EU does find fault with Google they can impose fines of up to 10% of the company's revenue.

Win Phone 7 Getting January Mega Update?    [ 30-11-2010 17:38 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: WPCentral     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The word on the street, and by street we mean the net, is that Windows Phone 7 is set to get a gargantuan update this Janaury. So big is the update, it is said, that "... Microsoft might as well call the platform “Windows Phone 8" according to Chris Walsh, one of the devs behind the ChevronWP7 unlock tool.

The chatter says that leaked screenshots should be appearing soon, but for the moment the following features lead the pack as being expected in the update:

  • Bing turn-by-turn directions
  • Copy/paste (why is this always such a big deal with mobile OS?)
  • Multi-tasking (unknown as to what form this will take)
  • Ringtone customisation

Presumably a lot more information will be on the way given that the update is supposed to be 'massive' whilst the above feature list is barely a list to be honest. We live in hope ...

LG Star Leaks Again    [ 30-11-2010 17:09 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: PhanDroid     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The LG star has been spotted before, but today some rather nice (read: clear) pictures came to light, which not only show off the handset itself, but the OS.

The OS is of course Android and in this case Froyo. Some might baulk at the thought of such a high-end device running what will soon be an outdated version of Android, but there's nothing to say that there won't be a Gingerbread update before release or even shortly afterwards.

You will no doubt notice that the handset is not running the vanilla version of Froyo, rather it has LG's own customied UI strapped on. Opinion on custom UIs is divided between those who love them and those who hate them, usually on a case by case basis so you can make your own mind up about whether this one looks good or not.

The handset features an HDMI port, a previously undisclosed feature and reinforces the handset's high-end specs, which also include a Tegra 2 Dual-core.

Head over to PhanDroid for more pictures.
