BBC iPhone Apps On Hold    [ 31-03-2010 13:51 ]

The BBC had been planning a range of iPhone apps, but they all look to be on hold for now, in a move that is sure to disappoint iPhone users. The BBC Trust, the body that governs the BBC, has aske for the apps to be placed on hold whilst it looks into their viability and necessity. This follows complaints from commercial newspapers that are worried the BBC will disrupt the nascent market for paid iPhone news apps. The BBC had originally announced a news app and a sports app at MWC back in February and there had even been talk of an iPlayer app being launched later in the year although no concrete details were given at the time. Since the BBC is funded through a public tax (the license fee) it would offer its apps for free and the apps would contain no advertising. This is what worries the paid for news apps, which fear that the BBC would simply steamroll over them as consumers flock to it for free news instead of paying or viewing ads.
