No Multi-Touch for the X10 ... Ever!    [ 29-03-2010 15:00 ]

Bad news for Sony Ericsson X10 fans hoping for multi-touch support somewhere down the line ... it's not going to happen. Ever. Period. Why the finality? After all the Nexus One shipped without multi-touch, but a bit of jiggery pokery later and it supports said multi-touch. Well the key difference is that not only does the X10's firmware not support multi-touch, the hardware doesn't either! Rikard Skogberg confirmed the bad news on Sony Ericsson's official product blog and it was again confirmed by Sony Ericsson Asia in the following statement:

Yes, this is correct, as it relates to both software and hardware support from the phone. However, like he [Skogberg] mentioned, we will be working hard on other solutions, for instance, zooming, a feature which has been requested frequently. This will not compromise the user experience which focuses on our unique applications, such as Timescape and Mediascape.

All in all not good news for the X10, but to put it in context it's not earth shattering either. Sure multi-touch is a cool feature, and more to the point a useful feature, and the X10 will probably suffer for not having it, but the lack of multi-touch isn't likely to be a deal breaker for most people, just as it wouldn't be the biggest attraction for most people if it did support it. Having said all that, this is exactly the sort of news that doesn't go down well on the tech blogs and you can probably expect to see the X10 come in for a fair bit of criticism because of it.
