First Windows Phone 7 Handset From LG    [ 01-03-2010 15:33 ]

After the initial excitement over Windows Phone 7 Series had died down the most obvious question was when we would get to see the new handsets that will use the OS. Steve Balmer himself had thrown out a timescale of 'the holidays' i.e. Christmas for the release of the first handsets. However, on a recent edition of the Engadget Show Microsoft showed off the first partner handset to run their new OS and it's from LG. Specs wise there isn't much surprise here because Microsoft has mandated a minimum level that all handsets must adhere to in order to run Windows Phone 7 Series (that never stops seeming like a mouthfull). All the usual features are present e.g. WiFi, 5 MP camera, etc and the handset also feature a slide out QWERTY keyboard.

It looks like a decent enough handset and no doubt we'll see more from other manufacturers in the months ahead, but one of the big questions is how different manufacturers are going to differentiate their products given that the specs requirements are mandated by Microsoft. The most obvious course is for them to really ratchet up the specs list with ever more impressive features. Initially though the newness and wow factor of Windows Phone 7 Series will probably be as much of an attraction as the specs themselves. Check out the video of the LG handset from the Engadget Show below:
