Samsung are on a mission to save your screen! The South Korean manufacturer is working on a new type of Super AMOLED display, one that will be very tough to break. OLED-Display.net are reporting that within the next two years Samsung aim to have in place ultra-rugged, nigh on unbreakable smartphone screens shipping out to OEMs. Interestingly the report doesn't make mention of the digitizer. Why is that interesting? Well the digitizer is the part of the display that registers touch input when you make contact with the screen. At any rate you can get an idea of just how tough these new displays will be from the video below. Two screens, one ordinary and one super tough, are put through their paces using a mallet and there's no prizes for guessing which one passes muster.

iTunes has received an update, a minor one sure, but an update nevertheless and it comes alongside the update to iBooks 1.1.1. The new version of iTunes, 9.2.1 to be exact, brings with it a host of bug fixes rather than brand new functionality. The sync function for iPhone 4 has been improved and there are some changes to how apps can be organised and of more interest is the 'bug fix' that 'disables older versions of some incompatible third-party plug-ins' (Apple aren't letting that one go are they?). Dragging and dropping bugs have also been addressed. There are some critical updates as well though, such as a fix for a problem that saw some iTunes crashes after visiting a 'maliciously crafted website'. In terms of iBooks the update will allow users to sync books on their iPhones and iPod Touches and organise and sync PDFs as if they were books. If you don't have it go get it, after all it's not often Apple fix things quickly these days is it?

An interesting leak has appeared for all those eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Blackberry Storm 3. Some bright spark managed to sneak a picture of the specs during a RIM training session so we now have a good idea of what the handset will be capable of. It's looking pretty good actually, here's what we know so far:
Maddeningly the picture isn't complete because some chap in front of the cameraman got his head in the way and blocked out the part revealing when the Storm 3 would be launched! What can be made out is "ember" so presumably the Storm 3 is going to be available sometime in the last part of the year, just not October.

The Wall Street Journal are running a story that claims Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, are currently looking for a new CEO to replace incumbent Olii-Pekka Kallasvuo. The WSJ lists the ever familiar 'people familiar with the situation' as a source, but speculation over Kallvuo's future has been heating up recently as investor confidence has taken a hit as the embattled CEO has struggled to move the company forward convincingly in the high-end smartphone space. Although the WSK couldn't get a comment from Nokia themselves on the matter their sources informed them that Nokia's board were due to make a decision on replacing Kallavuo by the end of this month. Nokia had apparently been in talks with the CEO of an undisclosed, but high profile, U.S. tech company, but the potential replacement apparently wasn't interested in relocating to Finland. Rumour has it that a second U.S. CEO has also been in talks with Nokia over the position.
Much of the criticism levelled at Kallasvuo has centred around Nokia's inability to gain traction in the increasingly important high-end smartphone market. Whilst both iOS and Android show strong growth patterns Nokia's Symbian efforts have floundered recently with newer version of the platform being pushed back. Nokia is also developing the MeeGo platorm with Intel, again drawing criticism with many in their fan community wondering why they don't adopt Android.
