LG Launch Re-Vamped App Store    [ 02-07-2010 17:24 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Yahoo! News     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

LG opened the gates on the shiny new version app store yesterday and had managed to round-up over 3,000 apps for the launch. That represents a doubling of app numbers and LG have been hard at work making the store more easily accessible for users, an especially important trait these days considering the number of app stores available. Interestingly enough LG has also made sure that the store, whilst catering to both feature and smartphones alike, is focusing more towards providing apps for its feature phones. Presumably a result of feature phones making up such a large part of LG's sales. Android apps will be making an appearance towards the end of the year, at the moment the only smartphone apps available are for Windows Mobile. Of course with WinMo pretty much going the way of the dinosaur as Win Phone 7 approaches and as Android becomes increasingly popular that emphasis will quickly disappear. The revamped app store was initially opened to 23 countries yesterday, with a further 10 being brought into the fold by the end of 2010.

When I saw this earlier today I knew I had to post it up for you. Even if you're not a Futuruama fan (and you'd be odd if you weren't) you'll still get a kick out of this. Enjoy.

Video: Google Voice Desktop Client    [ 02-07-2010 15:15 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechCrunch     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

A very interesting video of an unreleased Google Voice desktop client (yes desktop client!) has popped up in the interwebs. The client, as shown in the video, is running merrily along on OS X and is branded as 'Gizmo5 by Google'. Gizmo5 was the client's original developer, a small developer that Google snapped up back in November of last year. The client is fully functional, making and receiving calls with aplomb and fetching data from the Google Voice service. In fact the call quality was pretty decent and TechCrunch points out that the calls were made without a headset, just the internal speakers and mic. Unfortunately there is no information as to whether this is a new version of the software that Google is currently working on and planning to release or whether it is an older version that has long since been consigned to the dustbin. At any rate you can check it out in the video below:

Apple Releases Official Statement on iPhone 4 Antenna    [ 02-07-2010 13:07 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Apple     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

One of the most frustrating aspects of the iPhone antenna issue for those who are experiencing problems with reception has been the lack of any real engagement from Apple themselves with the issue. The most Steve Jobs has actually said on the issue is to hold the phone differently and leaked tech support memos only serve to reinforce the idea that Apple does not consider this to be a flaw, but rather a problem inherent to all phones. Well Apple have finally released a statement on the issue promising a software update within a few weeks to fix the problem. The statement again re-iterates the party line that reception issues are common to all phones when holding them in a certain manner and thus makes it clear that Apple's position is that this is most certainly not a hardware problem let alone a design flaw. The full statement is posted below:

"Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same- the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Apple

Nokia: "The Fightback Starts Now"    [ 02-07-2010 12:35 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Nokia Conversations     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Nokia has come in for a lot of flak of late over the direction its smartphones are taking, or aren't taking depending upon your viewpoint. Many Nokia watchers have expressed growing frustration with the company as rival platforms like Google's Android and Apple's iOS capture ever more market share and very importantly mindshare. Just yesterday Symbian-Guru, a longstanding website focusing on Symbian closed its doors with its founders citing the reason as a growing discontentment with Symbian as a platform and the hardware Nokia has been putting out. Such criticism has apparently not been lost on Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's new Mobile Solutions Chief who has posted up his thoughts on the future direction of the company at Nokia Conversations.

In terms of tactics Vanjoki is setting out Nokia's positin as that of a challenger rather than an incumbent and promises a "laser focus on quality". To that end Vanjoki is looking to re-assert Nokia's high-end device reputation, which has admittedly suffered through such projects as the N97. He is also seeking to boost the fan base, a huge asset that Nokia has seen increasingly become frustrated and disillusioned. Of note with respect to that last point Vanjoki does mention Ricky Cadden, one of the founders of the afore mentioned Symbian-Guru, perhaps some will see that as simply referencing a current event, but others might see it as an acknowledgement of one of Symbian/Nokia's underlying problems.

In terms of specifics Vanjoki comes out and says that the N8 will be the last N-series Symbian^3 handset that Nokia produces. However, he does go on to say that Symbian^4 may very well make an appearance in the N-series at some point, citing it as a 'strong possibility'. All this of course underlines the fact that Nokia's overall strategy is to coninue backing Symbian as their major smartphone OS. MeeGo is mentioned with Vanjoki even describing it as 'awesome', but crucially there is no mention of Android, a move that many in the Nokia fan community have at least expressed an interest in.

You can check out Vanjoki's full post here.

Apple: Steve Jobs iPhone Comments Are Fake    [ 02-07-2010 11:55 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Fortune & AppleInsider     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

There's never a dull moment where Apple is concerned these days it seems ... You remember that email exchange between Steve Jobs and a Boy Genius Report reader we reported on yesterday? Well it turns out that it was a fake. The revelation comes from Apple's public relations team reports Fortune magazine. Fortune was told, emphatically they point out, by a 'top Apple spkesman' that Steve Jobs was most certainly not part of the email exchange. The fake Jobs made comments such as 'It is just a phone. Not worth it." and "... you are getting all worked up over a few days of rumours. Calm down." The story takes another twist though because AppleInsider is reporting that they were offered a similar exchange a few days ago for a monetary sum. The exchange as it was published here on Mobile-Review, and originally on Boy Genius Report, was attributed to a man named 'Tom'. However, Boy Genius Report were either unaware or neglected to mention that 'Tom' was the same fellow who had been shopping the exchange around looking for money. AppleInsider say the man who contacted them about selling an exchange between himself and Jobs was one Jason Burford of Burford Advertising, a small firm creating advertising for local businesses. When Apple Insider pressed Burford for more information on what he was selling he replied "I do not wish to share all of it because I kinda went off on him and it is embarrassing."
