Google Introducing New Android Features Tomorrow    [ 11-08-2010 18:52 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: TechRadar     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Google are prepping for a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 12th August) where they will be showing off 'a couple of cool new mobile features." It's that charming little description that has tech pundits scrambling for theories as to what the Big G might have up its sleeve and as usual the theories range from the unrealistic to the fairly plausible. Let's start at the more fanciful end of the spectrum with the speculation amongst some that Google will showing off a FaceTime rival. This is a fairly easy theory to shoot down because there are plenty of third party apps available that can make video calls already and at any rate video calling is more of a hardware issue for Android at the moment and there isn't much Google can do about that since it's up to individual manufacturers.

There has also been some chatter over the possibility of Google debuting its cloud based music service that has been whispered about for some time now. That's a bit more plausible than the FaceTime theory, but that would be a pretty major feature ad Google would likely want to show that off at its own event rather than in the midst of other features. What's far more likely to be on show tomorrow are some of the features we'll see in Android 3.0 (Gingerbread). We may get to see the revamped UI, the improved cut and paste features and WebM video support. It might not be as glamorous as FaceTime, but they're probably more useful, and most importantly, more likely.

U.S. Wireless Market Almost At 100% Penetration    [ 11-08-2010 18:37 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: IntoMobile     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The U.S. looks to have finally caught up with much of the rest of the world in terms of wireless penetration, with the figure fast approaching the magic 100% mark. Analysts at consultancy firm Chetan Sharma examined the U.S. wireless market in Q2 of this year and their calculations gave the 95% penetration figure, but the figure is actually higher, more than 100% if you discount very young children from the analysis. The rate of growth in the U.S. was 6% in Q2 2010 and putting that figure in a year on year context it's 22%.

The main fuel for this rapid growth seems to be smartphones with some 31% of U.S. wireless customers now owning one, which represents a large shift from just a few years ago when featurephones were by far the most dominant force in the market. As one might expect the rise of smartphones has also seen a healthy growth in data usage with the average American customer now using around 230 MB of data every month. That represents a jump of 50% in just six months. The networks are benefiting from this of course, even if their infrastructure, in particulars AT&T's, is taking a pounding. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon all saw data account for around a third of their revenue in Q2 and T-Mobile wasn't far behind them with 25%.

LG Aiming For 6 Million Smartphones In 2010    [ 11-08-2010 18:36 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Unwired View     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

LG has long been the ugly stepchild of the South Korean market, scrabbling around in the shadow of its much larger rival, Samsung. We've heard various mutterings from LG over the years about how thye plan to make it big and invariably large numbers are quoted. That seems to be the order of business again today with a senior executive at LG making just those sort of comments to The Korea Times. The paper hasn't named the executive, but whoever he is he is apparently very specific citing that LG plans on shipping some 6 million smartphones this year and he even gives us a break down of that 6 million in terms of operating system. 4.2 million handsets will be running Android and 1.8 million will be running Windows Phone 7. That means some 70% of LG's smartphone shipments will be Android based, a not inconsiderable figure it has to be said.

The anonymous executive was also chatting about what LG plans to do in terms of its overall portfolio and it can be summed up in one word 'downsizing'. LG pumped out 145 models last year, but in 2010, the mysterious executive says, that figure will shrink considerably with LG releasing just 70 handsets, less than half the portfolio released in 2009. Presumably the idea is to focus more on quality than quantity, perhaps a good idea in LG's case.

iPhone Users Get More Sex (Seriously!)    [ 11-08-2010 18:16 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Wired     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The iPhone has been given many plaudits in its time, some deserved, some overblown hype, but a survey conducted by dating website OK Cupid takes every bit of praise ever heaped at the iPhone and scoots it up a notch with the claim that iPhone users are getting more sex than other smartphone users. The survey measured the number of sexual partners people had had and categorised the results by the type of smartphone they used. The results showed that iPhone users came out on top (if that's their preference), whilst Blackberry users snuck into 2nd place and poor old Android users were left trailing in 3rd place.

Since the results were released there has been a fair bit of chatter of exactly what (if anything) these figures actually mean. Some posit that iPhone users tend to be more affluent people and perhaps this has a correlation with them having more sex. Interestingly though the survey was only conducted on 30 year olds so how the figures would pan out for othe age groups is a question left unanswered. It's also worth pointing out that the iPhone itself isn't getting people more sex (and if it is then heaven help us!).

HP Planning webOS Tablet for Q1 2011    [ 11-08-2010 17:15 ]

Author: Irina Turina   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Paul Smith    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

Ever since HP bought Palm there has been speculation over exactly how it would use its new acquisition. Of course that led to various rumours about new webOS powered devices and it now looks like we might be seeing the first of those devices come Q1 of next year. According to Engadget  the project is codenamed 'Hurricane' and the Q1 2011 date was let slip during a meeting by Personal Systems Group VP Tom Bradley. It's certainly good news for webOS fans who saw the platform's tenure cut short when Palm was snapped up. However, it raises the prospect of HP poking its fingers into too many pies, namely three different tablet devices running three different operating systems; the Windows 7 Slate for enterprise, Android on the Zeen e-reader and now a possible webOS tablet.
