Google Planning 'All-Out Assault' On Mobile Market    [ 25-11-2009 15:37 ]

Talk of a gPhone isn't new, indeed the original rumours turned out to be Android and the G1, but in the past couple of days rumour of a Google branded and promoted gPhone have surfaced again. This time though the rumours feel a little more firm if that makes sense. The crux of the speculation is that Google is gearing up for an 'all-out assault on the mobile phone market".That's a pretty big claim to make, but it rests on talk of a gPhone handset featuring an advanced version of Google Voice, which would offer customers unlimited voice calls and strike a direct blow to the established networks.

In terms of specs the alleged gPhone is said to feature a Qualcomm processor that's almost twice as fast as the iPhone 3G S processor and the Flan version of Android, making it the most advanced Android handset on the market. Couple that with unlimited voice calls from Google Voice and the gPhone might be putting a lot of noses out of joint, both the networks and other manufacturers who have released Android handsets running older versions of Android. It's the networks that could be the real problem though because if they feel the gPhone harms their profits from voice calls and relegates them to the status of 'dumb pipes' they may not subsidise it. That would leave Google selling it directly to customers at the full retail cost, something that many may baulk at paying, even if it does promise unlimited calls.

In terms of release the talk on the street is sometime early next year. Is it all pie in the sky? Well we don't have long to wait to find out!
