Maemo to Replace S60 by 2012    [ 18-11-2009 17:53 ]

Author: Serge Novikov   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

It looks like Symbian 5th Edition could be going the way of the dinosaurs on Nokia's N series devices. The Finnish manufacturer has apparently been rather chuffed with the reception that Maemo, the OS the N900 runs, has received. The Really Mobile Project is saying that Nokia plan to drop S60 from flagship N series devices, but don't expect a switch to be thrown and Maemo to appear overnight. With the maturity of S60 there are a lot of apps and services available for it, something Maemo just can't compete with ... for the moment. As time passes though expect to see Maemo maturing until Nokia looks to make the switchover sometime around 2012. It's a logical move for Nokia, S60 doesn;t fare so well in terms of user experience when compared with some other OS and Nokia will be watching their share of the smartphone market very closely as competition becomes ever more vicious.

Sony Ericsson Set to Axe 2,000 Jobs    [ 18-11-2009 17:40 ]

Author: Ivanov Konstantin   Source: Engadget     Translation by: Administrator    Send news to friend  Discuss in forum

The recent launch of Satio and the announcement of the forthcoming X10 may have sent many of us who follow Sony Ericsson on something of a high and for a moment it may have been easy to forget that Sony Ericsson isn't actually doing all that well in terms of the raw numbers. A combination of the global recession and Sony Ericsson's own lacklustre performance have sene the once profitable joint venture sink into reporting large losses. Sadly that resulted in the loss of 450 jobs last September and it looks like more jobs are set to go according to information obtained by Engadget. Sony Ericsson aer set to close of their sites; North Carolina, Miami, Kista and Chennai. The resulting job losses could be somewhere in the region of 2,000. The cuts are said to be happening stages with severance packages for those who qualify and the opportunity to apply for other jobs in different locations. Hopefully this is the end of the restructuring and Sony Ericsson can get back to turning a profit and hiring people.
