The iPhone rumour mill has ramped up another gear with the news that Apple is offering to direct ship iPhones for free in the U.S. Coming at this particular time, only a month ahead of an assumed announcement of a new generation iPhone, the move can only be seen as a move to try and shift stock of the current iPhone before a new one makes an appearance. Even though the actual price of the handset is so far remaining the same as it always was the fact that any concession is being given is significant. In the UK O2 recently announced new tariff options for the iPhone, a two year contract that saw the handset being given away free. These may turn out to be the opening salvos in the effort to sell as much stock as possible before a new model draws attention away.

Elderly people have never constituted the most important market to manufacturers or networks, which is a shame given that recent statistics put the number of over 65's in the UK without a mobile phone at around 5 million. There have been a handful of products in the past to address the needs of this market, but the large manufacturers tend to stay clear of releasing such devices. However, Samsung has boldly gone where others fear to tread by announcing the C3060R, which is specifically aimed at the elderly.
The handset will boast a large display with large fonts and a backlit keypad to make the handset as accessible as possible. The screen comes in at 2.2 inches with a 176x220 resolution. The OS is the standard Samsung fare and it features an SOS function should the owner be in difficulties. A 1.3 MP camera, FM radio and WAP browser round off the spec sheet and are a welcome change from the typical elderly handset of the most basic handset possible. A JUne release is on the cards with a price of 150 euros being likely.
